Helpful Tips to Protect Yourself from Identity Theft

Mei
Identity theft is everywhere. Online, on television, in your email, and your they show up at your door. There are a few ways to protect yourself from these pesky invaders though.

For starters, don't make it easy for the potential thief to get your information such as your bank information, email accounts, mailing address, credit card information, and other personal information. If you do online banking, never keep your password the same for more than a few months. This makes it easier for hackers to steal your information. Don't use the same password as your password for everything you do online. It may seem much easier to that since you won't have to remember a lot of different passwords, but you're setting yourself up for possible identity theft.

When you are creating your password be sure to use letters and numbers and if at all possible use uppercase letters and symbols throughout your password. This makes it much more difficult for a potential hacker to figure out your password. Don't make it an obvious word like the name of your child or pet. Come up with something unique. And never ever write your password down on anything. This is just a way for you to say, "Hey, here's my password, take over my identity, rob me blind. I put this here just for you!".

You should beware of all of the paper that comes in and out of your house. Most identity thefts don't happen over the internet as everyone suspects. Many happen right in our own backyards. Everyday we receive mail delivered right to our doors and throughout that same day we toss much of it. Credit card instantly offers, old bank statements, credit card bills, and the list goes on and on. Well, on all of that paper that we think is just trash, is a gold mine for anyone who has the intention of using that important info for their own personal vendettas. In order to avoid being a victim of identity theft you should always be sure to shred any paper that could have your name, birth date, account numbers, social security number, or anything that in the wrong hands could ruin your life.

Some predators even go to the extent of stealing mail directly from your mailbox. Most stolen mail comes from when you put your bills out with a check enclosed. That red flag sticking up from your box is a direct sign for those who may want to steal your checking account information or credit card numbers. When you're mailing out bills, you should always drop them off at the post office or find one of the blue mail boxes to place your mail in. It may be out of your way, but it could save you from losing everything you've worked so hard for.

Don't let yourself be a victim of identity theft when you can use the simple tips to help save who you are.
