HelpfulTips to Raising Healthy Children

Our children also need a fitness and diet plan. We generally tend to think that children can eat anything while remaining healthy as they run around and play which is a form of exercise. But research says that one out of five children in America is overweight. The number seems to be growing. While genetic factors may be a consideration, children generally imitate the bad habits seen in their parents. They imitate poor dieting habits, relying on processed foods and fast foods, and lack of exercises.

Many kids spend more than 25 hours per week watching TV. Children spend very less time on physical activities and are sitting glued to video games and computers. Overweight children are more at risk of getting diseases like diabetes.

Some Tips to Make Kids Stay Healthy

The following are some tips to get your kids fit and to stay healthy.

Show support for your children. As far as possible, avoid criticizing your children and do not blame them. Talk with them as to your concerns about their health and weight. Motivate them to accept their body image and feel better about their images.

Show your confidence. You need to play a role model for your children by showing attention to yourself and your health without being obsessed. You need to show your kids how confident you are yourself about your body.

Involve everyone in the family. There are many activities that children and parents can enjoy together, irrespective of their athletic abilities. Go for family outings based on physical activities like biking, swimming and walking. Trekking can be a fun activity which you can plan for a few days as part of your schedule.

Practice healthy diets. Today families are very busy, but it does not mean you need to scrimp on nutritional aspects. There are healthy and fast recipes available in cookbooks. Try not to restrict any type of food. Include nutritious snacks and educate your kids about making healthy eating choices. You may need to be more creative for your children's sake. Cooking can be a fun activity once you are willing to come out of the same tried and tested cooked foods.

Make little changes. You may want to go in for a few changes in habits regarding your family. You need to discourage children eating while on the computer or while watching TV. When engrossed in TV, children often eat excess food than what they would normally eat. Do not allow children to snack when watching television. As far as possible, eat as a whole family, collectively. Motivate kids to learn enjoying good food while eating slowly. Involve them in decisions about foods and in the methods of preparation.

To get to know more about healthy exercises and eating habits, talk with a good nutritionist or dietician, especially one with good experience with kids. If you think your child is overweight and may cause health problems, talk with a pediatrician or physician immediately.
