Helping Customers Find You in the Virtual World

Carrie Lowe
While there are several different virtual worlds available to use, we shall for the purposes of this topic use the primary platform as Second Life, due to that particular world being the most advanced it is typically the first choice of businesses looking for a virtual presence as well. To begin with, you need to ensure that you have a piece of property that is setup and designed with your business goals in mind, if you intend to have classes a classroom type setup might be good, if you are going to be displaying art then a gallery type setup will be best.

Regardless of what your product or service even is, having the ability to properly assist people in finding your location will be critical to it actually being successful. Once you own a piece of land there are several things that you need to do. The first is look under the land options and ensure that you are setting the land to show in search. This typically costs a very small amount, but is very much worth the few pennies a week that it will cost. You should realize that you need to create a few keywords that will describe your business and the plans that you have for your virtual world presence.

After the land is set to show in search, the keywords that you select and place in the land description field will be active and people looking for those keywords will be able to find you. Without doing this it is still possible that you will encounter a bit of random traffic, however it will be much less focused on what you have to offer, and instead less likely to provide you with any major benefits.

You need to also consider if you are actually selling anything at your location potentially doing a small classified listing. If you are offering a product that is very unique, or something that would be extremely popular then this can be a very affordable way to draw a lot of attention to your location. Just be certain that you are not deceiving anyone with the keywords that you select, or the products that you are offering. Many people in virtual worlds will help to advertise your business and location if they are happy with what you have to offer, ensure that you are gathering the good publicity for your business and work as much as possible to avoid the bad publicity.
