Anyone who is a parent can tell you that children admire their mother and father above all. Children are often jokingly referred to as parrots, because they so often mimic what they see their parents doing. Therefore, the best place to help your child develop his or her self esteem is right inside their own home. One way you can accomplish that is by speaking highly of yourself. Show your children that you have a strong self esteem, and they will do what they do best, mimic you and have a good self esteem about themselves. You should also highlight your own skills and talents so that they can see exactly how to be positive about themselves without coming across as full of themselves or too cocky.
Another way to build your child's self esteem is to give them positive reinforcements. By praising your child when he or she does something good, you are giving them a reason to be proud of themselves. Children live for their parent's approval. If you can find no way or reason to praise your child, assign them a simple task you know they will excel at just so you have the opportunity to tell them what a great job they are doing.
If you notice your child is feeling a little upset, sad, or angry, be sure to talk to them. Be patient and honest with them, and give them a chance to communicate with you. You should not criticize them when they open up to you or they are less likely to confide in you again. It will help them feel better to talk to someone they know they can trust, and it will help you feel better too because you will not have to worry about what is wrong with them. When they are finished explaining what is bothering them, be sure to give them the best advice you can, offering positive solutions. Let them know that you appreciate them talking to you, and that you are around to listen to them any time they need you.
Teach your child about goals. Show them how setting goals can help them accomplish a difficult task. When your child can accomplish a hard task on his or her own, they will feel more confident in their abilities as a person. You can praise them for their job well done too, which will make them even happier about what they did. Make sure that you praise them every step of the way, and not just at the end. If they fail to meet their over all goal, be sure to tell them that it is okay, and let them know how great they did with all of the smaller tasks.
As you can see, a child's self esteem is a very important part of who they are. You can do a great many things when it comes to helping improve their self esteem. Never hesitate to complement them or praise them when they do something good. Always look at the positive things they do, and never criticize the negative things. By showing your child that you are proud of their accomplishments, and helping them set goals to accomplish tasks, you are helping them build positive images of themselves. So go ahead and get started making your child feel better about themselves today.
