What Happens when Your Child Has Too Much Enthusiasm

Mike Burnside
Having a child who is highly enthusiastic and spirited traits can be a gift for many parents. However, if those traits are too intense they can get in the way of your child's opportunities to have successful relationships with other children. At school age, a child is learning to make and keep friends, as it is an important part of their development. If you child is overly enthusiastic and has a loud personality, there are a few tips to help them bring the level down.

Educating the Enthusiastic Child

First, you need to educate your child concerning how their behavior is affecting the other children. Explain to your child that you want them to have good friends and that you are going to help teach them ways to make other kids feel comfortable around them. Emphasis the positive as well as the areas of improvement for your child. Tell your child how happy you are that they are happy and joyful and that you love them for it. Also, tell your child that sometimes if you are too happy and joyful that it can get too loud for other kids and scare them away.

Practice New Methods

Give your child an opportunity to practice what you have taught them about a less enthusiastic behavior. Consider a play-date with another child at your home where you can hear their interaction. If something gets out of hand, you can call your child to you and instruct them about how to handle the situation differently. Social skills classes can also help your child learn and practice good behavior.

Praise Good Work

As with any parental learning situation, be sure to praise your child when they have made improvements in their behavior. The more praise a child hears, the more your child will accept the lessons and strives for more improvement.

Involve Everyone

It is important that you talk with your child's teacher and verify that the problem exists at school as well as at home. Tell your child's teacher about what you are doing to help your child learn better lessons on enthusiasm and improving their social skills. Ask the teacher if they can help enforce the good behavior at school and provide you with feedback.

Seek a Professional

Many children are impulsive and enthusiastic to a certain degree; however, it might be advisable to have your child evaluated by a professional to verify that their behavior is age appropriate.
