Helping Your Kids Fit in

Marki E.
Contrary to popular opinion in the youth set, most parents really do remember when they were that age. We all recall how difficult it was to fit in with our peers. Whether your child is a little one just starting out, or an older kid trying out new ideas and images, sometimes they just need a little help.

One of the most difficult times a child may have trying to fit in is after a move. When we have to move our family to a new town, country, or even just a few blocks away, we sometimes get so busy that we forget how hard this can be on the kids. But, there are a few things we can do to help them out.

These ideas also apply to your kids who are trying to learn who they want to be. Starting school for the first time or joining a new team can be very stressful for our kids. So, take the time, and make the effort with these simple 'family time' activities to help the kids feel more comfortable.

Take a trip to the new location, or where the new peers hang out, ahead of time for a little scouting. Take your children to the mall, the school, or a restaurant in the new spot. Observe the other kids while you talk with yours. You can make comments during the trip like, "How do you like that haircut?', or, "What do you think of that outfit?".

Watch how your kids react to their new surroundings. Then, offer to take them shopping. Let them get some new clothes, a new hairstyle, or whatever (within reason) they might feel would help them to assimilate.

These simple steps can help your children to feel more like part of their new surroundings. But, there is nothing more important than listening to your children. Help them, guide them, tell them stories about how you handled similar situations, and how your solutions worked out.

In the end, fitting in is as simple as being yourself, finding peers who share your interests, and always staying true to who you are. If you teach this all important fact to your children, the rest is all just extra. So, talk to them, listen to them, be there for them, and your kids will always 'fit in', be comfortable in life, and be happy. After all, that's what it is all about.
