Hemorrhoids During Pregnancy

Hemorrhoids make their appearance mid to late pregnancy. The reason this occurs is because of the increased volume of blood that is circulating. This causes dilation of the veins in your rectum and vagina. There is also added pressure from your growing uterus.

If you become plagued with hemorrhoids, know that it is completely normal. Here are a few things you can try to bring more comfort to yourself.

Do your best to avoid constipation. Constipation will make hemorrhoids more painful. Do not strain during bowel movements.

Use pelvic floor exercises, know as Kegel exercises to strengthen the muscles around your vagina and anus. Tighten this part of your body, hold it for a few seconds, and then relax. Do this at least forty times a day. Try to work up to one hundred times or more.

An ice-pack may help ease the pain as well. This works for varicose veins of the vagina as well as for rectal hemorrhoids.

Cold witch hazel may be soothing. Soak a clean cloth or gauze square and hold it on your hemorrhoids for twenty minutes while you rest, lying down on your left side with your hips on a pillow. Use another pillow to support your arm and hand holding the compress.

Ask your doctor before using any over the counter methods such as Preparation H.
