If your sole purpose of the Norwegian Vacation is skiing or snowboarding then you should consider staying in a cabin or hotel in a ski resort. You'll save time traveling back and forth and the scenery at most of these resorts is spectacular. If there are more than two people traveling together a cabin is typically the best option, and here's a great tip before you book the cabin: don't choose one that's directly on the ski resort.
My best advice as far as the cabin go, is to look for one about 15-20 minutes away. This way you'll save heaps of money, as the closer to the ski resort the more expensive it is. I'm also advising this for people who are not party-goers. Hemsedal is notorious for high-school and college students' binge drinking at night, so ask the person of whom you are renting the cabin if they have many young people staying there.
If you on the other hand are after partying, drinking and meeting new people then you'll love Hemsedal at night. There are bars and clubs and lots of opportunities for having fun. Skiing in the daytime and drinking in the nighttime is what Hemsedal has gotten a big reputation for, to the dismay of the locals and other skiers.
Hemsedal is also great for families; they have hills designated for beginners which are fairly flat, as well as more advanced slopes. You should however, make sure to check that where you're staying does not have advertisement directed towards teenagers, for the reasons above.
What's great about Hemsedal is that they offer something for everyone, no matter age, proficiency and how much money you're looking to spend. There are fancy hotels and restaurants, as well as cheap cabins with adequate dining. There are gift shops on the ski resort and cheaper stores in the town. You can rent your own tutor, skis and snowboards.
There are a lot of tourists that come to Hemsedal, so no matter what you are looking to get out of your vacation you can meet up with people who want the same things you do. The staff all speaks English and are in my experience very helpful when it comes to advice about where to go and what to see.
Breathe in the fresh air of Hemsedal, look around you at the beautiful nature, dare to take a hike off the ski resort one day and Hemsedal will give you an amazing experience.
