Her One Christmas Wish

Mary E. Coe
Oh, mama, just got the news that I dread
So devastating, my soldier is dead
Mama, it's too hard, don't know what to do
Help me through this, I'm counting on you

This day is too hard, this day is too sad
Just lost a very special friend that I had
And, it is hurting, hurting, me
Tell me, will this hurting forever be?

Shattered dreams, it hurts so bad
A very special love, we once had

One year ago I became his bride
Along came war and took him from
my side

You say that time will make it alright
Please, tell how to survive this night

Remembering his tender touch
So many little things that meant so much
The way he held me in his arm
Never dreamed he would leave me alone

Memories we shared, dreams we dreamed
So many little things, so many dreams
we promised, together, that we'd grow old
Now, all that's left: a wedding band of gold

One year ago, I became his bride
Along came war, took him from my side
A brave, young man, he fought, he died
Just can't accept it, hard as I've tried
All I'm wishing for on Christmas Day
This pain to go; precious memories to stay.

P.S. Mary, it really isn't fictitious, because it really has happened to so many..

Absolutely wonderful! You truly made me cry. I thought back to the Vietnam war, and how many sad, sad stories I had heard. How could anyone ever blame the men and women who serve, and the families who spend every day in fear, for even one moment, for something they had to do...

Thanks to everyone for your very kind and warm comments. This poem is fictitious. It is based on war stories I,ve heard and everyday news about relatives and friends losing their loved ones in war.

    Another reason I am pro-peace and anti-war.
