Herbal Essences Dangerously Straight Pin Straight Shampoo and Conditioner Review

Amy Whittle
Straight and shiny curtains of hair are a staple of many shampoo and conditioner commercials. However, my wavy, slightly fine hair takes some daily styling work to get there. When Herbal Essences offered to send a sample of their new hair shampoo and conditioner, I jumped at the chance to review them, hoping to eliminate or shorten a step in my daily hair routine.

Product Appearance

Dangerously Straight Pin Straight Shampoo and Conditioner are sold in individual 12 ounce bottles. The bottles are pink and slightly translucent with green caps. The shampoo's cap is at the top and the condition's cap is at the bottom, making it easy to distinguish between the two products in the shower without consulting the label.

Once you open the bottle, you'll probably notice that the shampoo and conditioner are both lightly tinted pink. While I don't mind artificial coloring to make a product more attractive, I'm not sure why a product that has a "fusion of honeyed pear and silk" would be pink. However, this is a minor complaint, especially when it is considered that the color basically disappears while in use.

Shampoo

The Dangerously Straight Pin Straight Shampoo produced a rich lather and seemed to clean my hair without being overly harsh. However, you should be aware that this shampoo contains both ammonium lauryl sulfate and ammonium laureth sulfate, which makes it unsuitable to use if you currently have a Brazilian blowout or similar hair straightening treatment.

Conditioner

The Dangerously Straight Pin Straight Conditioner struck a nice balance between being heavily moisturizing without weighing down my hair or creating build up after several uses. It is definitely thicker than most drugstore conditioners, and my hair was easier to comb while wet. Of course, people looking for a conditioner without silicone derivatives will have to pass, but if you have hair that responds well to silicone, this is a good product for you.

Hair Texture

Naturally, my hair is fine and slightly wavy. It responds easily to heat styling most styling products. Although I used this product for two weeks, I noticed no difference in my hair texture when my hair was allowed to dry naturally. I still needed to use a straightening balm to keep my hair straight and protect against humidity, and I could not reduce my use of heat styling.

Scent

Herbal Essences Dangerously Straight Pin Straight Shampoo and Conditioner has a mild, pleasing scent with floral and fruit tones. It clings to the hair nicely, but I never found it overpowering.

Bottom Line

This Herbal Essences duo is a good choice for someone who wears their hair straight, but don't expect a miracle product: you'll still need some time with a flat iron if your hair has some natural texture. However, if you're simply looking for a product that will work with your existing hair regime, you could consider swapping your existing shampoo and conditioner with these products. In particular, I recommend the conditioner, which seems a cut above other drugstore options.

Don't think it would work on my hair either, my hair is naturally wavy, borderline curly, and thick, but I don't mind it. Even a straightener doesn't work so well :)
