Herbal Essences Totally Twisted Shampoo Review

The Pen
I bought a bottle of Herbal Essences Totally Twisted Curls & Waves Shampoo from a local Walgreen's a few weeks ago because I am African American and I wear my hair natural. I have a coarse texture with kinks and curls so I wanted a shampoo that would moisturize my hair, help to define my curls and reduce the frizz that I get.

The reason why I decided to try this Herbal Essences shampoo was because I'd previously tried the Herbal Essences Totally Twisted Curls & Waves Conditioner with good results so I thought the shampoo would work as well.

Totally Twisted comes in a purple & green c-thru bottle and I was sort of suspicious about trying it on my hair because sodium laureth sulfate and sodium lauryl sufate are listed as the second and third ingredients after water. But Herbal Essences claimed that the shampoo is fused with French lavender and jade extracts that "make curls and waves smooth, lush, and defined," so I was willing to give it a try.

Totally Twisted Curls & Waves Shampoo is more of a gel shampoo rather than a creamy formula that has a light and fresh floral scent that I slightly enjoyed.

But that's where the enjoyment ended for me. This Herbal Essences shampoo lathered really well and all that lather did nothing but make my hair feel extremely dry. It didn't help to define my curls or my kinks or waves, nor did they feel smoother or lusher after I rinsed it out.

I thought my hair was just going to feel dry before I added styling products, but it got worse when I began to style my hair. It's usually soft and easy to style, but after using the Totally Twisted Curls & Waves Shampoo my tresses felt damaged.

It was hard and really unmanageable, and worse my hair was left tangled, I mean seriously tangled, not just at the ends, but the roots were all entwined like spider webs. It was a mess.

This shampoo left a silicone residue on my hair which is why it felt so hard. My ends weren't curling the way they naturally did, they were going in all different directions and tangling, and they felt brittle and hard. My hair looked awful after I styled it even after it dried. It felt hard and it wasn't flexible so it barely moved when I touched it.

To my horror when I shampooed my hair (with another shampoo) the following week I realized that the silicone coating that Herbal Essences Totally Twisted left was still on my hair. So I had to use a ton of baking soda all over it which got rid of most of that residue but my hair still wasn't completely back to normal.

In the End...

I have no good things to say about Herbal Essences Totally Twisted Curls & Waves Shampoo although I liked the conditioner. I wouldn't recommend it all to anyone, Black, White, whatever. It is just way too harsh and drying for anyone with curly hair and for someone with small curls and kinks like mine, it's disastrous. 0 out of 5 stars.
