Herbal Medicine for Cold and Flu

Beth Lytle
Families can be affected by a cold or flu during all seasons. Winter is not the only cold and flu season and these days, families can't afford to miss work and school because they are sick. Many families are turning to holistic methods of treatment and there are many herbal medicines that work just as well as over-the-counter or prescription medications.

For colds, there are many herbal supplements that can help relieve symptoms. Goldenseal and Lobelia herbal supplements both help clear mucus from the lungs and throat. Lobelia is especially good to help clear out the lungs, but smokers beware as this herbal supplement may also contradict tobacco cigarettes and may make an individual who is actively smoking nauseous or sick. Goldenseal can also help prevent a bacterial infection from occurring.

Peppermint or spearmint tea can be helpful to someone who is congested. Pre-packaged tea can be purchased from the tea aisle of the grocery store or individuals can make their own tea by using dried peppermint or spearmint and steeping it in tied cheesecloth, an empty tea bag or a tea diffuser in hot water. Dried mint from the garden can be used too. Mint teas help clear out the sinuses and may help break a fever. Chamomile tea is good just before bed or to help individuals relax.

Eucalyptus oil can be used in humidifiers to help clear out sinus and are especially beneficial to individuals with chest colds.

Ginger tea or ginger soda can be sipped throughout the day for individuals with flu symptoms. Ginger is especially good for an upset stomach and may also help reduce headaches. Some individuals suffering from recurrent headaches may have an imbalance, which can be solved by drinking half to one teaspoon of organic apple cider vinegar in 8 ounces of water four times a day. Organic apple cider vinegar is better than regular store-bought apple cider vinegar, because it tends to have higher acidity. Ginger also contains antiviral components.
