Using Herbs to Treat Allergies

We all suffer from allergies at one point. Some of us are allergic to pets, mold, pollen, dust, and anything else that is airborne. Suffering from allergies is no fun. It can cause a runny nose, itchy and watery eyes, sneezing, congestion, rash, and difficulty breathing just to name a few.

There are prescription medications for allergy sufferers and there are also over-the-counter medications. But there are also herbal remedies a person suffering from allergies can try.

Speak with your doctor before trying any herbal remedies in case they may counteract with any other medication you are on. Also, don't forget that some herbs do cause side effects, especially when too much is taken. Here are some herbs you may want to speak to your doctor about trying to get relief from allergies.

Herbal Remedies for Allergies: Stinging Nettles

Stinging nettles is a good herb to use for allergies and even congestion. This herb has been used for a long time. It has an active compound that acts as an expectorant which helps loosen congestion and relieves respiratory symptoms and problems cause by allergies. This herb is also great for preventing viruses. It can be drank as a tea or taken in supplement form.

Herbal Remedies for Allergies: Lemon Balm

Lemon balm acts as an antibacterial which can prevent allergies from turning into infections. It can also help ease an upset stomach and is best drank as a tea.

Herbal Remedies for Allergies: Ginkgo Biloba

Ginkgo biloba is a good herb that increases blood flow to the brain and other parts of the body. It is also good for sinus problems. Ginkgo biloba can be taken in supplement form.

Herbal Remedies for Allergies: Eyebright

Eyebright helps relieve inflammation and tightens the mucus membranes in the eye. Since it counteracts mucus, it is a good herb to relieve allergy symptoms. It can help relieve allergy problems in the ears, sinuses, eyes, and nasal passages. Eyebright is also good to treat colds.

Herbal Remedies for Allergies: Licorice Root

Licorice root is an anti-inflammatory and helps relieve respiratory problems. However, it can increase high blood pressure so one should check with their doctor before using this herb. Also check with your doctor if you have estrogen-sensitive disorders before using this herb.

Licorice root is also good for coughs, colds, ulcers, asthma, skin disorders, and arthritis treatment.

Never replace your prescription medications with herbs unless your doctor says it is ok to do so.
