Natural Herbs to Help Treat Diabetes

Sharon Morris
Diabetes is a well known disease that affects lots of people every day. Diabetes affects the way our body uses food for energy. There are different types of diabetes which include pre-diabetes, type one diabetes, and type two diabetes.

Pre-diabetes is when you are close to becoming a diabetic. This happens if the cells in your body are becoming resistant to your pancreas or insulin and your body is not producing enough insulin as needed. It means your blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be called diabetes. If you are a pre-diabetic, you need to talk to your doctor about what you can do to prevent diabetes, of read my article here.

Type one diabetes is when your body is not making any insulin at all. This is when a person needs to take insulin injections. Type one diabetes usually occurs before the age of thirty but can affect any age.

Type two diabetes is when the body makes enough insulin but the cells have become resistant to it. Type two usually occurs after the age of thirty five but it can affect any age, including children.

If you have any of these types of diabetes, you will need to see a doctor and have he or she put you on prescription medication to control it. You will also have to watch what you eat and exercise right. There are also natural herbs one can take to help control this disease, but never replace your medication with herbs unless you talk to your doctor and he or she says it is ok to do so.

Herbal Remedies for Diabetes: Bitter Melon

Bitter melon is a tropical vegetable used in Asia, Africa, and South America. It is also known as balsam pear and has been used in folk medicine as a treatment for diabetes. Bitter melon is made of many different compounds which have anti-diabetic properties. Be careful when or if you use this herb because too much of it can cause side effects such as diarrhea and abdominal pain. Children or adults who suffer from hypoglycemia should not take bitter melon because it can cause or worsen low blood sugar.

Also, diabetics who take hypoglycemia drugs should not take bitter melon because it could interact with those drugs.

Herbal Remedies for Diabetes: Onion and Garlic

Onion and garlic have major blood sugar lowering action. Onion and garlic have two active ingredients believed to lower glucose levels by competing with insulin for insulin inactivity sites in your liver.

Herbal Remedies for Diabetes: Asian Ginseng

Asian ginseng is used in traditional Chinese medicine for the treatment of diabetes. It can increase the release of insulin from the pancreas and boost the amount of insulin receptors. It has a direct effect on lowering blood sugar.

Herbal Remedies for Diabetes: Stevia

Stevia is another great herb that has been traditionally used for the treatment of diabetes. It may have useful effects on glucose tolerance but it has not been confirmed through studies yet. It can also used as a sweetener to replace sugar.

Cinnamon is also good for the treatment of diabetes, along with your medicine of course. My mom is a diabetic and puts cinnamon on her toast in the morning. One can also take cinnamon in capsule form.
