Herbal Remedies for Infertility

Rachel Soden
Trying to conceive a child can be a frustrating experience. Timing everything perfectly each cycle only to have your period come. If you haven't been trying for at least a year, some doctors can be unhelpful regarding the whole experience. One option would be to go for the "natural" path.

There are many herbs and remedies that are being advertised today as being helpful in trying to conceive. They vary from helping to regulate a menstrual cycle, increasing the amount of cervical fluid, helping build the uterine lining and assisting with hormone levels.

However, you should be aware that pursuing the natural path to fertility is not going to be an immediate fix. Many natural remedies take up to 3 months before any improvement will be noticed.

Here is a small listing of some herbs/remedies that may assist in increasing your fertility. As always, consult your doctor or naturopath before beginning any medicinal/herbal regimen.

Vitex - which is also known as the chaste tree. This acts as a hormone regulator and will help if you have irregular periods or if you are not ovulating due to a hormonal imbalance.

Evening Primrose Oil - or EPO helps women to produce more fertile quality cervical fluid also known as "egg white cervical mucus".

Dong Quai - is a hormone regulator that alleviates cramping and pre-menstrual distress. It can assist a weak uterus by promoting metabolism within the organ, regulating hormonal control and improving the rhythm of the menstrual cycle.

Licorice - helps women with elevated testosterone and low estrogen levels, as commonly occurs in polycystic ovary disease.

Red Clover - may promote fertility, particularly in women who are deficient in estrogen.

False Unicorn Root - helps prevent threatened miscarriage.

Baby Aspirin - helps with blood flow to the uterus and ovaries. Prevents clotting and assists with the development of the uterine lining.

There are also some combination pills that are now being sold online. They have a combination of various vitamins and herbs and are being sold as fertility pills. If cervical mucus is part of your problem, you may want to research a product called pre-seed. It has gotten excellent reviews as a fertility aid. There is also some new research that indicates that acupuncture may be a way to boost natural fertility.

The important thing to remember as you are deciding on an herbal remedy approach is that these herbs are not regulated by the FDA. Some can be detrimental to your baby should you become pregnant while using them. Always seek a naturopath or an expert before experimenting with these remedies.
