Herbal Remedies for Migraine Headache Relief

Bev Cohen
Migraine headaches are debilitating for some people. Migraines are one of the most common problems seen in doctors' offices and emergency rooms. The significant pain caused by migraines can last for hours or days. It is believed that migraines are caused by expansion of blood vessels and release of certain chemicals.

Pain from migraine headaches usually occurs on one side of the head. Common symptoms include nausea, vomiting, photophobia (sensitivity to light), and phonophobia (sensitivity to sound).

There are prescription medications available for the treatment of migraines, but they don't always work. They are usually expensive and are not always covered by insurance. And some of the prescription medications have side effects. There are also herbal remedies available for the relief of migraine headaches. Below are some of the most effective ones. It is advisable to check with your doctor before starting herbal remedies alone or in conjunction with other medications.

Feverfew

Feverfew is used to prevent headaches. Feverfew is an anti-inflammatory and works like ibuprofen. It also may inhibit chemicals that cause blood vessels in your head to spasm. Check with your doctor for appropriate dosage amounts.

Passionflower (Passiflora alata)

This calming herb can be taken as a tea before bed. It stimulates sleep which is much needed when suffering with a migraine. It is also a pain killer and anti-inflammatory.

Peppermint (mentha piperita)

Peppermint is an herb used for headache relief. It can be used in the form of a tea or supplement or even used as an essential oil in aromatherapy. You can inhale the aroma directly from a bottle of peppermint oil or add a small amount of hot water to it and inhale the vapors.

Ginko (ginko biloba)

Ginko reportedly improves the flow of blood and gets more oxygen to the brain, which in turn relieves headaches and improves memory and alertness. It also is said to stimulate the release of norepinephrine, a neurotransmitter that is believed to contribute to headaches when its level in the body decreases.
