Herbal Steams for Asthma

W.S.
Steam inhalation is a time honored remedy for loosening mucous in the respiratory tract associated with coughing and colds. Adding herbs that have an aromatic effect such as eucalyptus, peppermint and rosemary can boost the therapeutic effect of the steam. But, can herbal steams be used to effectively treat asthma?

Some essential oils such as spruce and pine needle essential oils can worsen bronchial spasms. Plain steam inhalation has also been known to worsen coughing among some people who suffer from asthma. While herbal steams can be a great remedy for asthma, they should be used with caution.

Herbal Steams for Asthma - Start with Plain Steam

If you want to try using herbal steams for asthma, begin by inhaling plain steam first, to make sure it doesn't trigger an asthma attack or uncomfortable coughing. Carefully pour some boiling water into a heat resistant bowl and place it on a sturdy table. Then, use a towel to cover the head and the bowl, making sure to hold your head at least twelve inches away from the steam. If you begin coughing or wheezing at any time, stop inhaling the steam immediately.

Herbal Steams for Asthma - Using Plant Material

If you are able to inhale the plain steam without causing any unwanted irritation, you should be able to handle herbal steams to soothe asthma symptoms. Simmer one half cup of aromatic herbs such as those listed above (peppermint, eucalyptus, rosemary or thyme) in four cups of water. Allow the herbs to simmer for about ten minutes. Then, pour the liquid into a heat resistant bowl and place on a sturdy table. Cover the head and bowl with a towel, again keeping the face at least twelve inches from the steam at all times.

Herbal Steams for Asthma - Using Essential Oils

If herbal steams using plant material don't cause any irritation or coughing, you can move on to using herbal steams with essential oils. Simply bring four cups of water to a boil and remove from heat. Pour the water into a heat resistant bowl and place on a sturdy table. Add about three drops of essential oil to the water. There are several essential oils that can be used for herbal steams. Some of these include peppermint, eucalyptus, thyme and rosemary. If you have had success with one of these herbs for use in herbal steams, try using the corresponding essential oil. Place a towel over your head and cover the bowl, making sure to keep your face at least twelve inches from the steam and inhale.
