It is wise to educate yourself before joining the crowd in this new health craze. It is important to know how various herbs may effect the body and if they are safe to take with over-the-counter remedies or prescription drugs.
Since the various herbs may only require the use of the leaves, blossoms, roots or bark it is important to know which parts are being used to be able to compare price with quality.
Cheaper is not always better, reliable manufactures will only produce the purest parts of the herbs in their supplements. For example: if only the leaves of a particular herb is to be used and the product has the leaves with stems or bark included, the manufacturer is offering you a cheaper product but the quality is compromised.
Drugs are chemicals that may be derived from herbs or they may be entirely chemically based. They are designed to improve and prolong the quality of life, cure ailments and diseases. Aspirin or ibuprofen, are examples of commonly used drugs prescribed to lower a fever or lower inflammation.
Herbs are not classified as drugs but as dietary supplements. Dietary supplements could either contain vitamins, minerals, herbals, or amino acids, all aimed to add to or supplement the diet of an individual.
Vitamin and mineral supplements are to help the body maintain nourishment not acquired from proper diet and iron supplements are given for mild cases of anemia. They are not intended to be used as a substitute to any food or medicine.
All drugs, food, drinks and dietary supplements must be registered with the proper authority. We can be sure of the quality and safety of herbal supplements if they have been properly classified by the Food and Drug Administration.
Always consult your doctor before taking herbal supplement to assure it is safe for your particular health condition. Do not substitute herbs for the medications prescribed by your doctor for the maintenance of blood pressure, or the lowering of blood sugar and cholesterol.
Herbal supplements should only be used as directed by the instructions on the bottle or as directed by your doctor.
