Herbal Treatment for Brain Fog

Overview

People of different ages suffer from a temporary lapse in cognitive function referred to as "brain fog." Symptoms of brain fog include lack of clarity, confusion and dizziness but most often affects an individual's sense of concentration. Brain fog may be caused by a variety of reasons. Stress, anxiety and lack of sleep contribute to being unable to concentrate, leaving most people feeling un-alert or somewhat confused. Those who also suffer from emotional problems such as depression may experience brain fog.

Choosing an Herbal Treatment

The popular herb ginseng helps to improve memory, attention span and mental endurance and boosts mood levels.

Yerba mate increases concentration levels, according to Katherine Zeratsky of the Mayo Clinic, as well as improves mood and stimulates the mind to be more efficient.

Dandelion may be a beneficial herbal treatment for brain fog, because the leaves contain both vitamins A and potassium, according to the National Institutes of Health, while the flower petals feature lecithin, which increases levels of acetylcholine in the brain. Acetylcholine is necessary to maintain memory and has been used during research for treatment of memory deficiency, especially for those who have Alzheimer's disease.

According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, ginkgo biloba features phytochemicals that increase blood flow and oxygen to the brain, which improves memory.

Consider Herbal Side Effects

While most herbs are safe to use, some may come with side effects. Before taking any herbal remedy, ask your physician about possible interactions with other medicines you may be taking.

Known as the "brain herb," ginkgo biloba may increase the risk of hemorrhaging inside the skull. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, as well as people who are expecting surgery, should not use ginkgo.

Dandelion is an herbal diuretic, so it may reduce effectiveness of prescription medication. Speak with a physician about using dandelion if you are prescribed antacids, antibiotics or lithium.

Yerba mate may cause vomiting, nausea, irritability and headache. Stop using the herb if you experience any of these symptoms, and see a doctor immediately if you have dark urine, stomach pains and an irregular heartbeat.

Aromatherapy

Essential oils are also useful for increasing concentration, mood and memory. Rosemary herbal oil is often used to improve memory, mental state and relieve fatigue within individuals. Basil herbal oil improves mind strength and helps to clear the mind when you become overwhelmed or lethargic. Peppermint herbal oil is a refreshing essential oil, and is used to clear the mind and provide relaxation.
