Herbs for Dogs: Holistic Advice for Treating Minor Ailments

Herbs that Will Help Keep Your Dog Healthy

Crystal Sciarini

Many people take an either or approach to Allopathic medicine and Holistic medicine. I believe that taking a natural approach to your dogs overall health does not mean that you have to forego conventional Veterinary care. Holistic medicine in the form of herbs, vitamins, and minerals can be used along with the advice and medicine from a local trusted vet.

Stitches
Aloe Vera is a great topical treatment for after surgery or when an injury occurs that requires stitches. The aloe vera's bitter taste deters dogs from licking the wound and helps to heal the skin. The aloe will also help to reduce scarring of the injured skin.

Eczema
Allergies among people and dogs have been on the rise for man years. A great solution to eczema or hot spots on dogs is Burdock Root. Burdock Root is known as a "blood cleanser" and because of its delicious taste most dogs will readily eat Burdock Root. Best of all you do not have to worry about toxic side effects from Burdock since Burdock is considered a safe herb. Burdock can also help arthritis and kidney problems and can be used along with veterinary medicines, usually without interfering.

Car sickness or Indigestion
Just as in people Ginger is a great stomach soother. One Ginger capsule can be given thirty minutes before the car ride to help relieve most dogs of car sickness, use two capsules for large dogs. Ginger can also be given when your pooch has an upset tummy or excessive gas. Ginger is considered a safe herb so there are no toxicity or side effects to worry about when used properly.
Easily Stressed Puppy

Valerian has been used for centuries as a sedative because of its calming ability. Dogs that tend to stress over any change in their daily schedule will benefit from small, frequent doses of Valerian. Valerian is safe when used properly, however using Valerian only when absolutely necessary to reduce your pooches stress levels is recommended.
