"Herbs for Pets" an Alternative Health Care Book for Animals

"The Natural Way to Enhance Your Pet's Life"

Donna Thacker
The book, "Herbs for Pets" by Gregory L Tilford and Mary L Wulff is a perfect companion manual to go with my other holistic books that I consult for my family and friends. It is advertised as "The natural way to enhance your pet's life."

I am a believer in natural and holistic health care for myself. I also use herbs and natural remedies, when possible, for my pet care needs. My veterinarian approves many of my holistic treatments and has gone so far as to state that more vets should study and approve holistic remedies.

The book, "Herbs for Pets" is a comprehensive guide, not only to getting your pet well, but in keeping him well with all natural herbal solutions. It is very easy to understand and uses common terms to explain everything.

Understanding "Herbs for Pets"

The book is broken down into chapters and is easily usable as a teaching guide instead of just a basic reference book. For instance, Chapter 1 defines and discusses the principal practices of herbalism. The book goes into great detail about the uses and history of herbs.

The book also explains the importance of knowing when to use the herbs and when to take your pet to the veterinarian. I like that, because I have read books that will tell you that you may never need a vet again. This is not true, and "Herbs for Pets" makes it clear that just like with humans, there is a time to treat yourself, and a time to seek medical advice.

Chapter 2 is a complete guide of herbs listed in easy to reference alphabetical order. Each herb is explained in depth. The description includes full color photographs and explains the herbs full use in relation to your pet.

Each herb in chapter two is explained in sections labeled: Appearance, Habitat and Range, Cycle and Bloom Season, Parts Used, Primary Medicinal Activities, Strongest Affinities, Preparation, Common Uses, Availability, Propagation and Harvest, Alternatives and Adjuncts, and Cautions and Comments.

Even if you did not wish to use the information for your pet, the book, "Herbs for Pets" is a great instructional tool for learning about different herbs, and their uses.

Chapter 3 discusses the many ailments pets have and how to treat the condition with herbs you learned about in Chapter 2. This chapter of "Herbs for Pets" discusses things as simple as an herbal eye wash for an eye infection, to more detailed ailments such as cancer in your pet.

You will find recipes to make your own herbal flea repellant and herbal ointments to make for stings and bites on your pet. The recipes are very easy to read and follow.

Each chapter has color coded tabs on the pages, so you can quickly and easily find what you need. Even if you never plan to use the book for your pet's medical needs, you will find it very educational and informative.

I wouldn't be without my copy, and once you have it in your hands, you probably will not either. I purchased my copy of "Herbs for Pets" by Gregory L Tilford and Mary L Wulff from Barnes and Noble, online. It was around $20.00. Members of B&N get special discounts and free shipping sometimes.

It can also be found in local pet stores, but you will probably be charged the list price on the book of $29.95 US and $33.95 in Canada. Those who prefer Amazon can most likely find "Herbs for Pets" listed there as well.
