I suffer from bipolar disorder and it is a terrible mental condition. Without the right medication, I have bad mood swings. One day I can be so depressed that I feel nothing will ever get better and the next day I can feel so good and confident about myself that I feel nothing can stop me.
I am on prescription medication for bipolar disorder and the pills do help, but not always. I still have mood swings and lately I have been feeling really depressed. I have had to change medications many times and I feel I may have to again. This is why I have decided to check into herbal remedies to treat bipolar disorder. I know I cannot quit taking my prescription medication without first talking to my doctor but it does not hurt to try something different and natural. Who knows, these natural herbs may help me feel better and writing this article may help someone else feel better too.
Herbs to Treat Bipolar Disorder: Black Cohosh
Black cohosh can be used as a sedative. It has also been used for autoimmune diseases because it has anti-inflammatory effects. This herb may cause hormonal activity.
Herbs to Treat Bipolar Disorder: Ginkgo Biloba
Gingko biloba can be used to treat memory problems. This herb is an antioxidant and has been prescribed in Germany to treat dementia patients. It appears to increase blood flow to the brain.
Herbs to Treat Bipolar Disorder: Ginseng
Ginseng has energizing effects. It can be used to treat the depression part of bipolar disorder by treating the fatigue and lethargy people with depression suffer with.
Herbs to Treat Bipolar Disorder: St. John's Wort
St. John's Wort is extremely popular for the treatment of depression. This herb should be taken just like you take your prescription medications but should not be taken with prescription medications. It is prescribed in Germany for the treatment of depression.
Before trying any of these herbs, speak to your doctor. Never quit taking your prescription medication without speaking to your doctor because this can cause more severe side effects than the medications themselves. I am not a doctor and cannot tell you if you should try herbs for bipolar disorder instead of prescription medication. Only you and your doctor can make that decision.
