Halloween is my favorite time of year. I love to dress up and even though I am a grandma now, I still love to put on a costume and join the fun. There are many reasons not to let our kids Trick or Treat because of potential dangers out there and many families resort to having private parties at home.
It is hard on the kids to have to curtail their holiday fun because of the dangers. A party is not too hard to do and you can even get a few neighbors to pitch in and you can have a lovely Halloween bash for the kids. Here are a few things you can do for little or no money.
Bag of Worms
This on is fairly popular. Boil up some spaghetti noodles and let them cool. Put them in a bowl and mix in a little oil to make them feel creepy. Put a dishtowel over the dish and see if kids will rise to the challenge and stick their hand in the bowl to feel the worms. This one is sure to get a few squeals.
Halloween Punch
I like this idea because it is so inexpensive. Get lemon-lime and orange Kool-Aid at the store. Mix them both up but use one to pour in ice cube trays. Float green ice cubes (lemon-lime) in the orange Kool-Aid. As the ice cubes melt the Kool-Aid takes on a strange brown color. This is kind of fun and really inexpensive. If you want to make it a little fancier you can pour 7-up into the Orange Kool-Aid.
Deviled Egg Eyeballs
Make Deviled Eggs like you usually do. Half black olives and use them as part of the pupil of the eye. Take a toothpick and dip it into red food coloring. Draw lines on the top of the white of the egg making blood veins. This will give you spooky bloodshot eyeballs that are fun to eat.
Ghosts
Helium balloons are only one dollar at the dollar store. Take lightweight material or white tissue paper. Drape and tie the material over the balloon and give it a ghosty looking face by drawing or painting one onto the material. Helium balloons have a tendency to be drawn to body warm and electricity. Everybody at the party can have their own ghost.
If you have a Halloween party there is always a contest to see who has the best costume. You can decide if you are going to have categories or just one winner for the best costume. It depends on how big your party is going to be. If your kids like to dance then you can also have a dance contest.
Finally, if you really want to try an old classic there is the ever popular bobbing for apples. Personally this is messy and if you are wearing make-up you might not want to get your face all wet bobbing for apples. Have a spooktacular Halloween!
