"Here We Go Steelers, Here We Go!"

We're Not All Sports Fans!

Jeeze... I get tired of hearing that. And what's this "we" stuff anyway? Ya'd think the armchair quarterbacks scrambling to get their beers and snacks in place before the game starts while listening intently to the commentators' pre-game banter are what? ... actually part of the team? (Yeah, right. In your dreams!) Ever notice that when a team wins, the fans say "WE WON!!" but when the guys lose it's "THEY LOST!!!" and the armchair quarterbacks proceed to say why they lost. I just don't get it... as far as I'm concerned a bunch of grown men prancing around a field in colorful tight pants and being paid more than the President (even when they don't play) is asinine enough, but what I think goes beyond ridiculous is how usually "normal" people get so wound up about it all. It's like a religion, for crying out loud. (Hmmm... maybe that's why the NFL mostly plays on Sundays.)

And then of course there's all those fans who "support the team" wearing the ball caps (some backwards) and "official" jackets and the "official" team jerseys with a player's name across the back. What's up with that? (A dorky, geeky, skinny guy strutting his boney butt around wearing a shirt with the Bettis name across the back... sheesh.) Support the team?!? Well, I suppose so, cuz that merchandise ain't cheap! But I think they mean that moral support kind of stuff we did in high school. Okay... let's agree that's what it means. Why would anyone want to support some snob players who don't even live in the city or state where their fans watch them play? That seems kind of rude to me, especially considering that the non-resident players obviously aren't paying the state and local income taxes that pay for the programs that benefit many of their local fans. And if the Sunday euphoria isn't enough, there's all the promotion during the week. Here in Pittsburgh (and vicinity where Comcast seems to reign) they've got a special channel for the Steelers. "Steelers 24/7" they call it. Like all the merchandising isn't enough advertising and promotion?

Speaking of that Steelers channel... the commercial they use to promote it features this weirdo walking around with a black and yellow outfit; logo pants, shirt, clown wig... face paint. Okay, so it attracts attention, but dammit! do they have to show it at every commercial break during my Sunday Crime Time Mystery Marathon on The Hallmark Channel?!? Just my two-cents' worth.
