Heroes: My Favorite Show on TV

Here's Why!

Heidi Adams
Heroes. Ordinary people with extraordinary abilities. If you are a Heroes fan, you know that the previous line is the catch phrase for the Heroes series that made its debut in the fall. Now that season one has wrapped up, season two has already been renewed on the NBC network. The writers for the show, Heroes, just happen to have a background in writing some of the greatest graphic novels of all time. Jeph Loeb is well known for his work on a series of Batman Graphic Novels. What Jeph brings to the writing of the characters is deep characters, dark villains, and unity for a greater purpose.

Let's recap Season One of the Heroes series:Warning spoilers ahead

Humans across the world are realizing that they can do things they should not be able to do. Dr. Mohinder Suresh, the son of a geneticist has discovered his father's mission to identify the Heroes and study their DNA after his father is mysteriously murdered. Dr. Suresh takes it upon himself to understand his father's tracking system and begin locating the individuals with special abilities. Many people across the world are displaying amazing abilities such as, time travel, mind reading, super hearing, super strength, flying, the ability to influence people, walk through walls, become invisible, paint the future, the ability to go nuclear, and the ability to locate other heroes by envisioning them. These are all abilities of the Heroes characters in Season One. A super villain named Sylar even has the ability to take other heroes abilities by killing them and removing their brains- "seeing what makes them tick". The super-hero of the show-Peter Petrelli has the special ability to absorb other heroes powers just by being in their presence. Peter has a heart that is true, loyal, and kind. Somehow by the end of the series, Peter finds he is responsible for blowing up New York City with a nuclear explosion...himself. The heroes must come together in an effort to save New York City and the entire world in a sense...Sylar-the super villain is on the loose, wreaking havoc everywhere he goes. Not only must they save New York City from being destroyed in a nuclear explosion, but they must save the rest of the world and other heroes from Sylar who is hell bent on taking everyone's powers. Sylar was even voted by viewers across the country as the number 1 villain on television. That in itself is saying a lot!! Sylar IS one bad dude!

Somehow, the heroes characters realize that they have their abilities for a purpose. Not only that , but the Heroes are all connected in mysterious ways. The plot weaves a masterful web, shocking audiences at the very end of the series on who actually saves New York from blowing up. The very person you think is determined to see New York destroyed for his own personal gain in politics, Nathan Petrelli, uses his flying ability to take Peter into the upper atmosphere where he explodes far away from other humans. Now the question is...will Peter be able to Survive since he has absorbed the ability to regenerate? Will he continue to be nuclear if he does survive. Can Dr. Suresh find a way to help him control the ability if he does survive? Will Nathan Petrelli return for season 2? Or did he die in the explosion? There are so many unanswered questions that make viewers want to watch more and more about these heroes. The characters are rich in personality and flaws...that's what makes this show great and on of my favorite shows on television.

A glimpse of volume 2 was introduced at the end of the season finale. Hiro Nakamura-the time traveler has managed to get himself caught in the middle of a epic battle that dates back to ancient history. He falls from the sky onto a battle field of his ancient ancestors caught in the middle of a war. The sun and moon are in a full eclipse...what will Hiro find out about his ancient ancestors and his father's ability? Is Hiro, the most unlikely hero, destined to become a great warrior? Will some of the Heroes that were killed off in season one return in season two?

Episodes from season one can be watched on the NBC website-Heroes home page and also on the SCI FI Channel.

  • Hero Peter Petrelli has the most amazing ability of all of the Heroes characters.
  • Peter can absorb any ability just by being around the other heroes.
  • In season one this proves to be a fatal error in his gifted DNA. One ability may have killed him.
Volume 2 is titled Generations.
