Hidden Attractions in Central Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico's unique location in the Caribbean and the unique topography creates a year round summer climate that makes Puerto Rico a perfect destination to visit any time of the year. Puerto Rico offers more than just the commonly known and famous places like the Old San Juan and metropolitan area. There are hidden places to visit, most of them in the central part of Puerto Rico. Central Puerto Rico is dominated by the mountains, where you can find several forest reserves. This is the perfect place to find interesting activities in contact with nature such as camping, guided tours, fishing, climbing, rafting, hiking, biking, and caving. All of these activities are well worth the time, is the best option to discover the real Puerto Rico.

Orocovis:

Orocovis is the geographic center of Puerto Rico. Its name comes from the Cacique Indian, Orocovix, who was a remarkable Indian leader. Here you can find the Toro Negro State Forest with an observatory tower constructed by the Spanish as a lookout tower to protect the south coast of the Island. Another point of interest is the Island's only natural pool at the Doña Juana Recreational Center. Also enjoy the crystalline water fall "Chorro the Doña Juana." Then you can go to the Museo Orocoveño, this museum exhibits Taino Indian articles, antiques artifacts, and historical photos of Orocovis.

Barranquitas:

Barranquitas founded in 1803 is known as "Cuna de Próceres" because of the many poets, writers, educators, and politician that this town has produced. When visiting Barranquitas you can't miss the town's church, with its hand made arched wood ceiling. For the art lovers the Museo de Arte y Antropología exhibits Puerto Rican art, and the only Greek-Roman collection in the Caribbean.

Aibonito:

Aibonito is known as the Switzerland of Puerto Rico and the Darden of Puerto Rico. The main reason for these names is the year long refreshing climate. This is the highest town in Puerto Rico at 2,401 feet above the sea level. Visit the Mirador Piedra Degetau observation tower for a breathtaking view Aibonito and even of San Juan Bay area in a clear day. Don't miss the gothic architecture of the town church, this is a National Historic Monument built in 1887. In the summer from June trough early July enjoy one of the most famous Puerto Rican festivals, the "Aibonito Flower Festival."

Lares:

Lares is the home of the "Plaza de la Revolucion" and el "Grito de Lares". You will find several monuments commemorating the place where Puerto Ricans fought against the injustice of the Spanish government. Visit "La Heladeria de Lares" where you can sample one of the unique local ice creams flavors such as rice, beans, and avocado.

Utuado:

The name Utuado is derived from the Taino Indian word "Otoao" which means "between the mountains." When visiting Utuado enjoy the view of the "Dos Bocas Lake" a beautiful, large reservoir. Also visit the Caguana Ceremonial Park and museum that features 10 bateyes (ball fields), petroglyphs surrounding a central sacrificial stone monument, and a small museum. This ceremonial park dates back to 1200 AD.

Ciales:

Ciales is known for the extensive cave systems and the rivers that run through and under the area. Tours can be coordinated with private guides and nature tour operators. This is also the perfect place for coffee lovers; this is still the largest agricultural product of Ciales.

Central Puerto Rico offers a cultural rich experience, and a different point of view of the real Puerto Rico. History, adventure, and a lot of hidden attractions are waiting to be discovered at the beautiful mountains of the central Puerto Rico.
