Hidden Benefits of Community College

Community College is Much More Than High School with a Smoking Section

In two other articles about community college, I wrote about the benefits of their certificate programs, and how to start your education inexpensively at a community college. But your community college offers a lot more than traditional education. This article focuses on ways you can keep your body and mind alive through your community college.

At my home in Corona California, I receive a little publication about community education which contains all kinds of listings for classes offered by the local community college. I've taken dance classes which are open to the community. They offer classes on almost anything you can imagine, real-estate, pet training, arts and crafts, music. You can learn ESL, learn about writing, learn a language, and exercise.

Speaking of music, I learned recently that my local college has a great music program! Community colleges offer many artistic programs. They're always putting on concerts and plays. Currently I'm taking guitar lessons through the college. They also offer beginning courses. This particular college has a great jazz and classical music program. They have a fine theater program as well. Many of my students have been in plays produced by the school.

In addition, many colleges offer organized sports programs. In the past I have taken bicycling courses just to stay in shape. It's cheaper than a gym!

One of the hidden benefits of taking courses at a community college is that you get some basic health care as a student. You are eligible for health screenings, and basic examinations. They offer birth control as well as mental health services. Mine even offers a program to stop smoking. Since I don't have health insurance, the last time I was in there for a TB test, the nurse suggested that I keep taking a course each semester so I can have some basic health care.

Your community college offers all kinds of opportunities. Of course you can start your higher education, or get a certificate in a particular skill. But you can also take classes for personal enrichment and fun! And don't forget the hidden health care benefits. If you need to take a course, or if you want to stimulate your mind or your body this summer, check out your community college!
