Hidden Benefits of Crafting with Children

Cari Dunn
We all know doing crafts with children enhances their creativity, but this is not the only benefit. Creative play can increase a child's sense of self worth, provide fine motor skill development, and foster valuable bonding time.

Being creative can help a child increase their confidence. This is one time to let them make a mess and finish their project however they want with nothing more than basic instructions. When your child is done with their masterpiece, hang it up in a special place so your child can show it off to friends and family that come to your home. This will further increase their confidence in that something they made is worthy of being displayed.

Fine motor skills are very important for skills such as cutting with scissors, using manipulatives in math, and handwriting. When a child lacks strength in their hands it can make handwriting very difficult to master. Helping these muscles get strong also reduces fatigue as your child is expected to write for longer periods of time in school.

Crafting can provide valuable bonding time for a parent and child and also for siblings to bond with each other. During craft time there are no right or wrong answers and it should be a relaxed time for everyone involved. Use this precious time to ask your child open ended questions about their project and learn about your child's unique personality and abilities.

Now you know the hidden benefits of crafting with children you won't feel guilty to put your work aside and craft with your children. Don't worry about making a mess or doing it "right", just have fun with your child.
