Hidden Cameras: Things to Consider Before Buying

Wireless surveillance cameras. You see them everywhere you go these days. Revolutionary advancements in the computerized technology field over the last thirty years have spilled over to improve all electronic devices, making them smaller, more efficient, and less costly from their predecessors. Once only available to the affluent, wireless security camera systems are now commonplace in many homes and most businesses.

A basic wireless surveillance system can be set up and operational in less than 15 minutes. All you need to get started is a personal computer, a router or transmitter, and the cameras. The surveillance software should come in the same package as the cameras and is easy to install. Most systems are now in color and no longer need special monitors. The video feeds can send their digital information directly to a television set, any computer monitor, or straight to a video recorder. Most wireless networks can transmit through building walls, floors and ceilings up to a radius of about 100 feet. This allows the business or homeowner the versatility of monitoring both outside and inside areas from one station.

Be sure to assess your camera needs before you hastily purchase a system. Video cameras that are going to be used outdoors are weatherproof and can withstand the temperature variations associated with outside use. A system manufactured for indoor use will not last if it is subjected to a wet or non-temperature controlled environment.

Installation of the camera system is easy. Just mount the cameras so they point directly at the area you need watched. Some cameras run on battery power, others need a connection to a power source. Plug the video receiver into an electrical outlet and attach the cables to your router or transmitter. The transmitter will send the video directly to your viewing or recording equipment. Of course, this is the most basic system set up. Systems that are more sophisticated are available. They can involve multiple monitoring stations and many cameras. Professionally installed systems can even improve the value of your home or business.

Professional wireless surveillance systems, although more expensive, may be more in tune to your needs. Signal boosters and long-range transmitters can boost the standard range of approximately 100 feet to one thousand feet or more, depending on your security needs. Some top of the line security systems have transmitters that will broadcast a signal up to a mile or utilize night vision and infrared technology. These systems are very expensive and usually unnecessary for the average home or business application.

One drawback to fixed, or one position, cameras is if you want to watch a new area someone has go to each camera and manually reposition where the cameras point. Remote controlled camera systems are available. The advantages of theses radio controlled cameras can greatly outweigh the extra cost factor if you need to be able to change the camera angle quickly or often. The cameras can be adjusted from the system control center as frequently as needed.

Wireless surveillance camera systems have moved out from the privileged homes and elite businesses into every day life. They can be as simple as one fixed camera, or advanced enough to monitor the casinos in Las Vegas. Chances are there is a system that will match your needs to a "T."
