Hidden Secrets

Donna Cavanagh
We all hold onto our own secrets
We keep them barricaded within our heart
Buried from disingenuous souls
Who we think might use them to tear us apart

The thing about secrets is that they rise to the surface
They find their way into the light
When we least expect it, they make their entrance
And we are caught off guard without the ability to fight

The best remedy for secrets is honesty
Let them breathe in the open air
While our secrets may be important to us
The rest of the world may not truly care

Why are we so hard on ourselves?
We think anything less than perfection is a disgrace
But it is our mistakes that give us compassion and hope
They give us our dreams to pursue and chase

Do not be ashamed of past mistakes
They are the reason we become who we are
Imperfection is the state of being human
We all have our secrets and our share of scars

I went through this not long ago. It put me in tears for days. Your poem just reminds me to put my head up high and not care what others may say anymore.

Very good Donna. Someone said recently that "Life is so very hard". They were right but the fact is WE are guilty of making it hard - and that's no secret. Thank you for sharing this poem.

I usually save secrets for special friends...but it's no secret how much I love your writing!

But should we share with our children?

What Bonni said, my thoughts as well. Good job :)

Your writing skills are admirable. You manage to weave the personal into the universal quite nicely.

Great work again Donna. There is something refreshing to others to admit and expose your faults too. They actually become more likely to do the same. I think truer words were never written (save the Bible of course). :-)

    True words.

Indeed my friend you speak the whole truth so wisely. Loved it!
