The Age of Conan Hyborian Adventures MMORPG recently went into beta testing and is creating quite a stir in the online gaming communities. In joint development by Funcom (Anarchy Online, Dreamfall) and SCi/Eidos (Tomb Raider, Hitman), The Age of Conan MMORPG is currently in the technical stage of the beta testing process.

The Age of Conan MMORPG is set for an October 2007 release date and has won numerous awards from E3 the annual consumer electronics and video game trade show including "Best MMO of E3" by Gamespot, IGN, Gamespy, and Yahoo.

Ian Livingstone, the Product Acquisition Director of Eidos, said in a Funcom press release that: "The many E3 awards, the extensive worldwide press coverage, the vibrant online player community, the strong global brand and Funcom's extensive MMO experience are all factors which bode well for the future of 'Age of Conan', and we will do our best to contribute to making it into a successful MMO franchise in the years to come."

Anticipation for the Age of Conan MMORPG is high. Oliver "Tarib" Kunz, a Funcom Community Manager, announced in a post on the Age of Conan Developers Forum that over 100,000 users signed up to beta test the game over the 2007 Easter weekend. 50,000 users signed up within the first 24 hours of the initial announcement of an open beta test.

Interested players can still sign up for the beta test at the Age of Conan beta test website.

In a press release issued by Funcom, Microsoft and Funcom have signed a development and marketing agreement to optimize the Age of Conan MMORPG for Windows Vista. It will however still be playable on Windows XP.

Microsoft has also confirmed that they will be releasing the game on the Xbox 360 at a later date after the initial release of the game for the PC in a report from Team Xbox. This move will make the Age of Conan MMORPG game more accessible to a wider audience of gamers. There is already talk of the Age of Conan MMORPG being a World of Warcraft killer.

The World of Warcraft MMORPG is the most dominant force in online gaming and currently has over 6 million subscribers according to WoW Insider. Age of Conan Hyborian Adventures is looking to change that with revolutionary game play.

Information coming from the Age of Conan MMORPG website promises innovations such as being able to engage in battle while on horseback, huge multiplayer player versus player combat on an epic scale where formations are the key to victory, and 7.1 surround sound. The game supports both DirectX versions 9 and 10 which offers the newest and most groundbreaking graphics technologies available according to Microsoft.

The Age of Conan MMORPG website is also showcasing the uniqueness of the fighting engine. Using a revolutionary 6 axis control scheme, players will be able to target their attacks to specific areas of the body and chain spells together into one super attack.

Above all else, the Age of Conan MMORPG promises to immerse players in Robert E. Howard's much beloved Conan universe and to be true to the original and often dark content-- replete with the occasional barroom brawl. This is not a game for children; it is aimed squarely at adults.

In other Conan news, Variety is reporting that Rick Alexander is producing a remake of the film "Conan the Barbarian" for Warner Brothers. It is likely that this version of Conan will be released direct to video and is scheduled for a 2008 release, hot on the heels of the Age of Conan Hyborian Adventure's release.

2008 could very well be the year of Conan.

Wow sounds fun! It would be nice to see a new mmorpg come out that is actually good. I haven't really liked any since FFXI. Hmmm...considering how much time I spend on FFXI maybe I should stay away from this game!
