Macy's, Saks, Dillards, Nordstrom, Bloomingdales and Neiman Marcus All Participating in Giveaway

Carly Hart
On January 20, 14 major department stores will be giving away free cosmetic products as part of a cosmetics settlement involving alleged price-fixing. The suit has been settled with the retailers admitting to no wrongdoing. Affected consumers can enjoy a free product as part of the settlement. A full list of retailers who will be providing one free cosmetic product is listed in detail on www.cosmeticssettlement.com, with the list containing such big department store names as Macy's, Saks Fifth Avenue, Dillards, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus and Bloomingdales.

Who qualifies for a free cosmetic product and what free products are being given away on January 20?

The free cosmetic product that will be given away to class members on January 20 will vary from store to store. A "class member" encompasses anyone stating that they purchased department store cosmetics from at least one of the department stores on the affected list between May 29, 1994 and July 16, 2003. The free cosmetics giveaway associated with this cosmetics settlement will be on a while supplies last basis and will only encompass certain cosmetics (valued at $25 or less) listed on thecosmeticssettlement.com site.

The Cosmetics Settlement site lists as possible freebies various cosmetic products from a host of manufacturers including Chanel, Christian Dior, Calvin Klein, Vera Wang, along with many other well known designer cosmetic products. An affected class member could receive body lotion, perfume, mascara, shower gel or various creams as restitution for being affected by the cosmetics lawsuit. A full list of free products that are eligible for this giveaway is listed on the Cosmetics Settlement website sourced below. Not every product will be available at every store, and consumers are limited to just one free cosmetic product.

Cosmetic settlement giveaway happening at a good time for retailers

Coming off a disappointing holiday season, retailers will welcome the extra traffic to their stores generated by the cosmetics settlement. Macy's recently announced that it would be closing 11 under-performing stores across the U.S. and in Hawaii. Today, Forbes.com reported that Saks Fifth Avenue,Walmart and Sears all reported "big declines" in holiday sales, stating that it was the worst holiday shopping season in 39 years. The lure of a free cosmetic product may turn out to give a much needed boost in sales for the retailers affected by the cosmetics settlement.

Went to Macys here in Salt Lake City today and was told that they were out of the "free cosmetics" the very first day and that the average age of people getting the free stuff was 13 years old......

According to my relatives, the Dillards in Montgomery, al. let you see the list of cosmetics, fragrances etc. and they chose an item of their liking. the Dillards in Oxford al. 36203. did not show you the list and they put only lotions and shower gels on the table for you to sellect from, no fragrances. I wonder why???????

I bet the crowds will be so thick you won't be able to stir them with a stick ... people will probably be camping outside and lined up worse than on black friday!

Very cool! With record cold here, I may not be able to take advantage of this (afraid of car dying) but I'd sure like to. I bet the stores will be mobbed!

Free cosmetics? Wow. Of course, what are the odds that their supplies are going to run out rather quickly? Great coverage on this class action.
