High Energy Dog Breeds

Are you very active? Do you enjoy taking long walks? Do you jog or roller skate? Would you like the perfect companion dog that will be more than willing to accompany you during your daily workouts?

If you have a large property and prefer to work out there, of you have to go to the park or other recreational areas for your physical fitness routine, there are several dog breeds that you should consider. These dogs are not for everyone, but if you are active and want to share your life with the right dog, check out the following top candidates:

High Energy Dog Breed: The Australian Shepherd - Click here

This dog, also referred to as the 'Aussie', is a medium size dog that has a coat of either blue merle, black or liver color, tan or red. They can have blue eyes, brown or amber. They are easy going and remain in the puppy playful stage for many years. They get along well with kids and they love to play. They are easy to train, which is a great quality for an active dog to have. Be prepared, the Aussie loves to play and needs to play, or he will get bored. The males can weigh up to 65 pounds and the bitches weight up to 55 pounds. These dogs cannot survive in an apartment. They need a very large yard and a log walk or other form of exercise daily.

High Energy Dog Breed: The Border Collie - Click here

I have friends that have a Border Collie and I have yet to see the dog sit still for more than two minutes at a time! It is a medium size dog that is full of energy. This dog comes in a variety of colors, but black and white seems to be the most popular. These dogs are not bred for beauty, but for their working ability. They are also highly intelligent. You don't have to reward this dog with treats, they prefer to be praised with words. When the Border Collie was originally bred it was for the purpose of working on farms. These are high energy dogs that require a heavy dose of exercise daily. They need to be socialized during puppy hood as they are rather shy. The males weigh up to 45 pounds and bitches up to 42 pounds. Remember, they have unlimited energy and you need to be sure to exercise them daily.

High Energy Dog Breed: The Great Pyrenees - Click here

This dog is also knows as the Pyrenean Mountain Dog. It has unusual dew claws, one on each front leg, but two on each back leg. Their coats are mainly white in color. They could have patches of tan, red-brown or yellow. There is a house not far from mine and the owners have two of these fantastic dogs. They are beautiful to see, except when they have been rolling in the red dirt! These dogs are highly devoted to the family and are courageous and obedient. They do well in a family with children, as long as they were raised with kids from puppy hood. They are a little independent and it is up to you to keep that under control. The Great Pyrenees male can weigh up to 100 pounds, and the bitch can weigh up to 85 pounds. As with many larger dogs, they are prone to hip dysplasia. They can't live in an apartment; they need open land and lots of exercise on a daily basis.

There you have it, three fantastic dogs for those of you that enjoy a lot of exercise and want to share that time with a great dog! As always, you need to do a lot of research when you plan on getting a dog. The more you know ahead of time, the better off you and your dog will be. Learn well and be a responsible pet owner.

Very helpful -- Prospective pet owners should keep in mind their own capabilities and time constraints when considering getting a higher energy dog.

It sounds like it would be alot of fun having dogs like these. I always loved the dog, Tramp on "My Three Sons." I wonder if that dog is one of these breeds...Anyhoo, really good article, Abby.

I am not kidding or trying to be funny here. We had an Australian Shepard when I was 10 - 11 and that dog tried to rape me!!!! I am DEAD SERIOUS. I was outside bending over, and that dog was on a mission to make me his b*tch. High energy is an understatement!

    Interesting take.

Yes, the Aussie and the Border Collie need to be kept busy all the time. They're best on ranching farms and not in apartments or homes where people work all day.

These dogs sound really great. Good to see an "Aussie" in the list. I imagine these would keep any owner active and fit.

Just watching a Border Collie is exhausting. There is a great video on Youtube of one tearing into a giant pumpkin.
