I enjoyed reading the Twilight Saga. I have heard numerous opinions by professional writers, about how Stephenie Meyer's writing is awful. Not that I disagree, but I thoroughly enjoyed reading the Twilight books and blew through all four of them in less than two weeks. For me, the storyline obviously outshined any horrible writing.
The movie Twilight, starring Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, was simply not what I expected it to be. Although it followed most of the events in the book, the acting seemed awfully stiff and forced. I think part of what made me feel this way about the movie is that Robert Pattinson tries too hard in the movie not to use his accent and this shows through in his acting.
To be quite honest, I am very surprised Twilight won for Best Movie in the MTV Movie Awards. I was even more surprised to find that Kristen Stewart won for Best Female Performance. Sorry, as much as we love Bella, we all know the truth.
I think this always happens when you read the books before watching the movies. With books you create your own images of settings and characters. Then, when the movie is not what you expect, it seems...well, just wrong.
I recently watched the trailer for New Moon and it does not look like New Moon will follow in the footsteps of Twilight in keeping with the accuracy of most of the events in the book. As I said before though, I have high hopes for New Moon. Perhaps the cast will be more comfortable and the acting will shine through better. I seriously hope so anyway.
New Moon also has a different director than Twilight. Twilight was directed by Catherine Hardwicke. New Moon is being directed by Chris Weitz, who directed The Golden Compass. A good interview with Kristen Stewart and her take on having a new director for New Moon (and Taylor Lautner's muscles) can be found here http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/thedishrag/2009/01/mtv-caught-up-w.html
Even with my disappointment in Twilight I am still excited to see New Moon, the trailer looked awesome! I am even more excited to eventually see Eclipse and Breaking Dawn (the third and fourth books in the Twilight Saga) transformed from words into film.
