High Officials Sexually Abused More Than 800 Needy Children in Portugal?

In Portugal, one woman and half a dozen men are on trial for allegedly raping little boys.

"Six men and one woman stood accused of sexually abusing minors and adolescents, raping children and running a pedophile ring at a state-run children's home in Lisbon during the 1990s."

The children were living at the Casa Pia, which is a facility that takes care of around 4,500 deprived children.

These people supposedly caused harm to over 800 young people for about 6 years. The victims currently "between 16 and 22," presented disturbing accounts during the trial.

They also pointed out "their alleged abusers" in the courtroom.

There has been "more than 800 witnesses and experts, including 32 alleged victims."

A driver of the Casa Pia, Carlos Silvino, admitted to over 600 crimes and exposed the other defendants.

However, the accused are rejecting the charges.

The Casa Pia was supposed to protect these children. Instead, it seems as though the establishment became a dreadful place for the young people.

These adolescents were already underprivileged. Then it looks as if those adults took advantage of them.

This is similar to the Catholic Church's sexual abuse scandal. Some of the priests pretended to fear God, yet they were violating little boys.

"It was in the 1950s the first reports of sexual abuse in the Catholic Church came out. But they were isolated cases, dealt with in secret, behind cloister walls."

Every country should make sure they create laws that will severely punish all pedophiles. In Portugal those accused of sexual abuse can face up to 25 years.

Here is a list of the people who are being accused:

-"Carlos Cruz, a popular television presenter with a three-decade career in show business."

- "Jorge Ritto, a decorated career diplomat and former UNESCO ambassador."

- Three other men are also charged with child sex abuse, including a doctor and a former Casa Pia ombudsman."

- "A 68-year-old woman, Gertrudes Nunes, is charged with providing her house for meetings between the children and the alleged pedophiles.
