"I thought Freshmen were going to win because I thought we could put up a good fight against the sophomores" said Jacki Kreymborg who was the starting wide receiver of the Freshmen team.
Freshmen were coming up big in the first half, with large third and fourth down conversions. The Sophomore team was barely holding on with their defense collapsing, but their offense was a different story with Danielle Rau the starting running back, they couldn't go wrong. It was a battle of offenses till the end.
At the end of the first quarter, there was no scoring with minor errors coming from both sides such as dropped passes.
The second quarter was a different story for the Freshmen as they went up 7-0 on a 63 yard touchdown pass to Hailey Gittings on a play called Arkansas.
"It never crossed my mind, but I was playing a scoring position and I'm extremely happy I did" said Gittings after her touchdown reception on Monday night.
The Freshmen could relax a little bit during half time with a small cushion, but they knew they had to keep up their play or the strong Sophomore class would eat their defense alive. The class of 2012 came out a little too relaxed when Rau scored a rushing touchdown in the middle of the third quarter.
The game was not going well for the Freshman with several turn over on downs in a row.
The Freshman defense managed to come up big with key tackles on fourth downs to keep the football in the hands of the offense.
At last, the fourth quarter. Both teams stepped up their game and tried to come together to make their last several plays ones to remember that could put them on top for the win. Everyone had to pull all of their training in the past week together for a heated, brutal final effort that would decide it all.
The Sophomore team had the ball in possession and was working their way up the field with time running down.
There was five minutes thirty seconds left with the clock ticking down faster and faster it seemed.
With the offenses last breath they handed the ball off to Rau and let her work her magic. She got past several players with missed tackles and made it into the end zone for a touchdown! The Sophomore team had gone up 14-7 with the extra point through the uprights. Momentum was definitely on the Sophomore's side.
The Freshmen had one last chance to win with under a minute and thirty seconds left on the play clock. They were running on their last bit of fuel and were tired to the last second.
The Freshmen team had one last chance to tie it up with the ball inside the ten yard line and 11.1 seconds left on the clock. No timeouts and the call had to be perfect.
The players trusted the ball with Alyssa Rodriguez as she dropped back in the quarterback position. There was instant pressure and Rodriguez had to get rid of the ball fast. Rodriguez let the pigskin fly and it fell into the arms of a Sophomore with three seconds left on the clock.
The quarterback on the Sophomore team knelt the football and let the play clock run out.
Everyone on the Sophomore squad celebrated and cheered and all there was left to do was for the Freshmen team to wait till next year with a 0-1 record.
"I was disappointed with my team because everyone could have pushed a little harder and pulled it out in the end" said Kreymborg after the defeat.
