High Speed Internet from Google

Google Offers New Ultra High-Speed Internet

Micheal E. Brinkley
Over the past few decades, the Internet has made astonishing progress across the globe. Since its start in the early 1970's, Internet service has continued to spread and it's speed has continued to increase. When the Internet started, it was simple. A relatively small number of computers were connected allowing information to be transfered between them. As more and more people gained access to this network, many business people began to realize the benefits in creating better and better Internet service. As time went on, eventually broadband speeds came to the public. After DSL and cable had their time in the spotlight, wi-fi and satellite Internet took their place on stage.

At the start of 2010, it was believed that this would be a year of great progress and discovery. As we see the worldwide economy on the edge, there are many people who are stepping up to the plate and trying to make things better. People in the United States and other nations are finally starting to take politics into their own hands, looking to make a difference. Doctors are sacrificing more and more time and money to find cures for diseases that have plagued us for years. 2010 is starting to look promising and now we see that the Internet which connects so many people is starting to move forward again.

Google, the immensely popular search engine which was first brought to the public on September 15, 1997, has decided to take a step into the world of Internet service. Over the past few years Google has successful broken into other parts of the technological community. They've even gone so far as to offer their own brand of cellular phone, such as the Nexus One. But now, as 2010 really begins to get under way, Google is looking to revolutionize broadband Internet service.

Fiber-optics was an amazing invention from the beginning. Fifty years ago, transmitting information through light would have seemed like an idea meant for a science fiction novel. But now, we see fiber optics all over the place. The idea is used in anything from medical applications to television. Now we are going to see something new done with fiber optics on a large scale. Google intends to provide ultra high speed to as many as 500,000 people, just a starting number, in the near future. This new type of Internet service will be far faster than anything that we have seen thus far. Most Internet connections used in the home offer around 100 times less speed than Google's proposed fiber optic network which will offer speeds at around 1 gigabit per second! Downloads will be almost instantaneous and pages will load in the blink of an eye.

Not only will this new network, if successful, provide many people with ultra high-speed Internet access, but it will most likely give the ISP industry an economic boost. This idea from Google will cause a large amount of competition as other Internet service providers attempt to keep up. Will this feat boost the overall economy, not very likely, but it will be interesting to see its effect. If you're wondering when you'll be able to have this supercharged Internet in your home, you'll have to wait and see. There are no official dates as of yet, but Google does intend to begin building the network soon and providing this service to people in rural communities first. Supposedly Google will be choosing target communities some time this year.
