3. Yu-Gi-Oh! The Movie
Directed By: Hasuki Tsuji
Release Date (US): 8/13/04
Domestic Gross $19,765,868
The Yu-Gi-Oh! Movie, officially entitled Yu-Gi-Oh! The Movie: Pyramid of Light, was developed for Western audiences. This shows in its box office numbers. While grossing nearly $20 million in the US, overseas box office was under $10 million, which, considering the popularity of the Yu-Gi-Oh franchise, is quite a low figure. Perhaps box office numbers would have been better if the movie hadn't been such a stinker.

Release Date (US): 11/10/99

As you can see, domestic box office is often misleading with anime movies. Some do well both domestically and overseas, such as the first Pokemon movie, while others do little business in the US, but phenomenally well overseas. Adding in foreign box office, we see that Spirited Away with a combined gross of $275 million tops the list of highest grossing anime movies.

Post a Commentprincess mononoke didnt get # 1 on list because its #1 in japan for anime but their measuring it in what it got in america.
I loved Spirited Away
i think akira should be on this list
theres something i dont get about this article? How is princess mononoke so far down the list??? I used to live in japan unitl a few months ago and princess mononoke was the top grossing movie of all time even beating out titanic which was number 1 for a while. Im really confused on this article.
I think some lower grossing movies were so much better than higher grossing ones. It's just the amount of media attention they received that made them as popular as they were. Nice article though!
^_^
Out of all these, Princess Mononoke is the by far the best in my opinion.
Interesting. I will have to check these movies out. Thanks.
I agree that "Spirited Away" is a wonderul movie and is worth the investment. My daughter, who is now 13, steered me toward this movie. I hadn't even heard of it until she told me about it. She loves most of Hayao Miyazaki's movies.
interesting article!
This was educational for me !!...thanks for this one !!
