Learn What Cloud Computing is and Why You Should Care!

J G Hodnette
The Cloud Computing World Forum was only started in 2009, so this is the second annual celebration of cloud computing. It was hosted this year in Olympia, London for the 29th and 30th of June. People can come to this conference to see the full supply of cloud computing materials, suppliers, integrators, and end-users.

Cloud Computing

For those unfamiliar, cloud computing refers to the new trend of computing to happen mostly on the internet. Now, we use google and google tools, we shop on Amazon, and we even may start assembling word documents on online versions of Microsoft word. The benefit of being to access documents online as opposed to on software installed onto our computers is that you can run many programs without using up your computer's processing power (since the actual program is on a server somewhere else, not on your computer) and you can access your program from any computer.

Keynote Speakers

The two day show included some excellent keynote speakers who explained the basics of cloud computing and the force that it will have in the future market of businesses. Business men explained how they integrated cloud computing into their businesses and how it saved them money and computer efficiency. Among the speakers were Pamal Sharma, CIO of General Motors and John Killey, Head of Reality Services of Citigroup.

Enterprise 2.0

Enterprise 2.0 is the software that connects computers efficiently with the web-based programs that most businesses need. It was featured all throughout the Cloud Computing World Forum as the example of the future of web-based computing. This style of computing is less expensive, more reliable, and more efficient than traditional computing. Where it hits criticism is that cloud computing can potentially be less private than normal computing since all of the information is online where it could be seen.

Evening Awards Presentation

For all of those companies who participated in the Cloud Computing World Forum, there was an opportunity to get recognized at the evening awards presentation. Abiquo won the Best Enterprise Solution award while NetSuite had the best cloud application. Other big winners were Sentrigo with the best Security Solution and Cloud Linux who had the best Start-up Company.

Informative JG. I own a small amount of stock in a company involved with cloud computing...should be interesting to watch it's future unfold.

Excellent review. I would be curious about any security issues.
