Highway 127 Yard Sale: The World's Longest Yard Sale

The Perfect Dollarwise Vacation

Raymond Manley
Folks are always looking for ways to save money during tough economic times. Families are cutting back on what they buy and even on their summer vacations. A road trip along the "World's Longest Yard Sale" is a great way to find some incredible items at bargain prices and have a fantastic low cost vacation at the same time. Shoppers need to start planning now; the yard sale starts the first Thursday in August and runs through the following Sunday. Following US Highway 127 and stretching 654 miles through four states from West Unity, Ohio to Gadsden, Alabama, the yard sale winds its way through countryside and towns of all sizes. In preparation for the huge sale each year, local residents turn their closets, attics, garages, and storage sheds upside down looking for the perfect items to catch the buyers' eyes.

More than 4,000 vendors also make the trek to US Highway 127 and set up shop for a few days of haggling with the enthusiastic pilgrimage of shoppers. Buyers will find a seemingly unlimited supply of antiques, home-made quilts, wood crafts, and a fantastic lineup of artisans along Highway 127.

Front lawns, empty lots, and community parks all turn into yard sale stalls during the four-day event.

Visitors can also indulge their culinary urges as they navigate the mammoth yard sale. The Highway 127 yard sale will be lined with stands offering farm fresh produce and enough country cooking to satisfy every taste.

The World's Longest Yard Sale started in 1987 and now draws thousands of visitors who make it to the area using every mode of transportation imaginable. Traffic can get thick at places along Highway 127, so settle back, take your time, and be ready to relax on your shopping and touring mini-vacation.

The yard sale winds its way through some beautiful countryside. Shoppers and visitors will find various local events and parks worth exploring.

The annual Jamestown Jamboree at Mark Twain Park in Jamestown, Tennessee is one stop worth making. The event features bluegrass music, dancing, clogging, and almost everything "country."

For shoppers who want to spend a little time communing with nature, the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area is along the way. This newly designated area encompasses 125,000 acres of the Cumberland Plateau and protects the free-flowing Big South Fork of the Cumberland River and its tributaries. There are two developed campgrounds as well as plenty of great hiking and fishing.

Another place to pull off Highway 127 is the Sergeant Alvin C. York State Historic Park In Pall Mall, Tennessee. Sergeant York was a simple Tennessee country boy who became a national hero during World War I for his bravery in France during the 1918 Meuse-Argonne Offensive against the German forces.
