Highway Accident Reduction

Each year many accidents on highways are reported. Accidents on highways are very dangerous and many can be avoided. An estimated two-thirds of highway accidents occur during the summer. Also, many accidents involve drunk drivers. Highway accidents can be reduced in a number of ways. This includes: adding more lighting, having a mandatory law requiring drivers to retake driving tests every 10 years, and installing cameras and speed detectors. Accidents on highways are hazardous and sometimes fatal. However, enacting these safety precautions, highways accident rates can be reduced.

During the night, highways can become very dark. Visibility can be greatly reduced, especially during bad weather. Adding more lighting would improve highway visibility and make signs easier for drivers to see. This would reduce the number of people changing lanes abruptly, for example, so they don't miss off ramps. Also, such things as potholes, and construction zones would be easier to see. This would reduce the number of drivers making sudden avoidance maneuvers at the last minute.

As people the population ages, many drivers become more cautious and their reflexes become slower. They begin to drive differently then they did when they first got their drivers license. This can often be a negative thing. People can forget proper driving skills and become overly cautious, causing unnecessary accidents. A mandatory law requiring people to retake driving tests every ten years would help address this problem, and ensure that all drivers on the road are still capable of driving. People who are no longer capable of meeting the driving test requirements would have their driver's license taken away. The roads would be safer and this could reduce many accidents.

Speeding is a big problem on roads, particularly on highways. Careless drivers speeding and breaking the law cause many accidents. Installing speed detectors and cameras would be a good way to catch drivers who speed. The speed detectors would catch people speeding and then pictures of their license plates would be taken. The tickets would be mailed to the driver's house. Repeat offenders could have their licenses taken away. By introducing this method of road safety, many more speeding drivers would be caught, making roads safer.

Many highway accidents can be avoided by improving highway safety laws, highway lighting, and introducing speed detectors and cameras. By improving highways it is possible to save many lives and make communities safer.
