With four seasons and close proximity to the Pacific Ocean, mountain ranges, rivers and lakes, Eugene offers outdoor possibilities year-round.
Weather in Eugene
The Eugene area sees, on average, more than eight inches of rain in November and December, and between 5.0 and 7.5 inches per month from January through March, when daytime temperatures average between the mid-40s and the mid-50s.
The warmest, driest months in Eugene are July and August, when precipitation levels remain below an inch and daytime temperatures stay in the low-80s, on average.
Hiking in Eugene
Eugene is home to a handful of hiking opportunities, with Skinner Butte and Spencer's Butte in town, and Mount Pisgah just southeast of the downtown area.
Spencer's Butte rises more than 2,000 feet above sea level, providing sweeping views of Eugene and its surrounding area. The butte has three maintained hiking trails to the summit that are between 0.5 and 1.0 miles, as well as a network of trails that wind around the butte.
Skinner Butte is located in the middle of town, in the 100-acre Skinner Butte Park, and features several miles of hiking trails around the butte itself, with views of downtown Eugene from the 682-foot-high summit.
Mount Pisgah, which includes the 209-acre Mount Pisgah Arboretum, offers hiking trails through the valleys surrounding the mountain near the Willamette River, as well as a three-mile roundtrip trek to the summit, which tops out at 5,730 feet and provides views of the Eugene area to the north and west.
Fishing in Eugene
The Willamette and McKenzie rivers run through Eugene, providing plenty of fishing opportunities within city boundaries.
Anglers reel in salmon, steelhead and trout from both rivers without having to travel far from the downtown area. Fly fishing is popular in the Eugene area, particularly during the summer steelhead run.
In addition, the Pacific Ocean is only about 60 miles to the west of Eugene, meaning salt-water fishing opportunities are about an hour's drive away.
In town, Fern Ridge Reservoir on the west edge of Eugene offers plenty of bass, catfish and crappie. The lake, which has a surface area of 9,000 acres when full, features opportunities for boat and shore fishing. The Alton-Baker Canal at Alton Baker Park is another popular fishing spot near the downtown area, with anglers reeling in trout and steelhead.
