Hiking Gear for Your Dog

Lisa Legere
What better way is there to spend an afternoon than hiking with your best friend? Be it a short stroll through your local park, or a long back country hike, there are certain safety measures to keep in mind.

Know your area

Know where you are going and what hazards you might encounter. The terrain you encounter might not be uncomfortable for you, but your tender footed pup might have some problems with hot asphalt or sharp rocks. Walking on a log over a creek takes some dexterity for us two legged creatures, but might be impassable for one with four legs. There are precautions you can take if you know your path will cross an area that is rough on your dog's tootsies. You could allow your four legged pal to walk on the grass beside your walking path, or purchasing a pair of dog shoes could help protect his tender pads. Neopaws.com offers a variety of Dogs shoes to protect in any situation.

Stay Hydrated

During the summer months, we all find ourselves drinking more often, especially during exercise. Fido is just as susceptible to dehydration as you. If you are packing water for yourself, don't forget a collapsible bowl and water for your pup. You can't count on a stream for your pooch's only source of water. There are many sources of lightweight portable bowls for water and kibble if you are going on extended hikes. Ruff Gear for dogs is available through their website and offer a wide range of water bowls and other safety gear.

Extended Trips Hiking

For an extended trip, first keep in mind your best friend's age and condition. For example, a German Sheppard with hip dysplasia might be a great companion, but not the best long hike partner.

Once you have determined your pooch is able to handle the terrain and duration of your hike, proper gear is a necessity otherwise you haul all of your stuff, plus your pup's kibble, bowl and all of his water.

There are several sources for dog packs for all different sizes of dogs. The packs range from a lightweight just an afternoon hike bag to a several day back country type saddlebag. The product I have been most impressed with is from Outward Hound which is readily available from PetSmart and other online companies. Our Sheppard carried a saddle bag that strapped onto a harness with Velcro for easy removal when we stopped.

The key to a great hike is making sure everyone is comfortable enough to enjoy the hike!
