Hiking Helen Hunt Falls

The Great Outdoors Doesn't Have to Be Expensive

Hiking for those physically able to, is a great way to not only celebrate great outdoors month, but it is a tranquil and relaxing activity. It is great exercise, and there is something about entering the realm of nature that has a way of turning back the screws of the rat race and helps in finding that inner peace whether you are a Christian, a Buddhist, or what ever your spiritual background. If you are in the Colorado Springs area and want a short getaway that isn't hours away and doesn't cost money to enjoy, I would suggest taking a couple of hours hiking Helen Hunt Falls.

Helen Hunt Falls does not require a State Park permit or entry fee, the hike is uphill most of the way and has a clearly marked trail with stairs of railroad ties along the steepest areas making it not only relatively easy to pace yourself, but it is great exercise and has a natural beauty that can be enjoyed by young and old alike. If you are not into hiking, you can drive up to the lower falls and find a place on the rocks to simply sit and relax, or you can hike the trail to see the upper falls and a beautiful view of Colorado east of the front range mountains.

I am using Helen Hunt Falls simply as an example, you may not live in Colorado, but probably every state in the union has beautiful woods and country side that can be enjoyed and many areas are free of charge. The Rocky Mountains, and in my neighborhood of Colorado, there are trail heads everywhere. Some places like State Parks may require an entry fee of $6.00 or an annual pass, but there are also national forest with free hiking trails off of just about every road in our county. Mueller State Park alone has over 50 miles of hiking trails, Pikes Peak has hiking trails, Pike National Forest is also peppered with Hiking trails all along it's borders.

Celebrate the Great Outdoors month by seeing what this country has to offer in the great outdoors. Not only is every trail different, but after an afternoon of hiking through nature you just might find yourself going home relaxed, peaceful, and with a new appreciation of your own local area, and the natural beauty this country has to offer. Hiking is one of the greatest ways to enjoy the natural beauty of this country. Take it in instead of whizzing past at 60 MPH on the freeway, you may never look at your neighborhood the same again.
