Yosemite National Park has breathtaking vistas that travelers love to see. Within the beauty lies a great deal of danger, if a person doesn't heed the warnings. There are warning signs throughout the park that tell people of the great danger in going beyond a certain point. Ignoring the warnings could cost lives. There are simple rules to follow while in Yosemite National Park that helps all visitors stay safe while enjoying some of the most gorgeous sites in the United States.
How to stay safe while visiting Yosemite National Park
1. Heed the warning signs. Do not climb over rails to get a better view or show the world you are not afraid. Everyone is invincible until something bad happens. Yes, the waterfalls are amazing, but falling into them is deadly.
2. Acclimate yourself to the area. Before visiting the park, read up on the areas you are interested in. Find out the specific rules and safety measures to take for each activity you intend to partake in.
3. If heading out on a hike, let someone know where you plan to go and how long you intend to be. If you haven't returned in a reasonable amount of time, a search and rescue operation will be set up to come find you. Anything can happen while hiking in Yosemite. Simple injuries could occur as well as disastrous accidents.
4. Stay away from the wildlife. It is wildlife and therefore it should be left to its own devices. Do not approach or feed the animals. Do not hunt the animals and do not trap them. There are strict laws regarding animals in the park. The penalties are not worth it if you get caught.
5. Take a map of the park with you. Anytime you leave the area of the park you will be staying in, take the map with you. This will make it much easier to find refuge if you get lost. Taking a compass with you is not a bad idea either.
6. Take a flashlight and whistle with you. Make sure the flashlight has fresh batteries and is working. The flashlight can be a great help if daylight ends while hiking in the wooded areas. The whistle is much better than yelling for help if you need it. The voice gives out after a while. A whistle will also help deter animals from attacking you if you come across any during the hike.
7. Do not wander from the trail. Wandering from the trail can be extremely dangerous. Many hikers become lost after wandering from the trail and open themselves up more to wild animal attacks. Staying on designated trails will help search and rescue people find you easier as well.
8. Take plenty of water and food. Water is essential to keeping yourself hydrated. Both water and food will help you if you become lost for too long.
9. Beware of possible weather changes. The weather can change at any time. The sun could be shining brightly one minute and then a thunderstorm occur the next. You never know what you might get during some seasons of the year in Yosemite National Park.
10. Do not have campfires or any other type of dangerous fire activity if there has been particularly dry weather. A park ranger can tell you if there is a fire ban in the park. Starting a fire could cause major disaster for the park, other humans and the animals that live within its confines. Wildland fire claims thousands of acres per year. The damage can be even greater if the fire gets extremely out of control. Severe penalties can be placed on those who burn during a burn ban.
Follow the safety rules while visiting Yosemite National Park so you will be able to pass the wonderful memories on to family and friends. Far too many people take unnecessary chances while hiking in national parks. Do not take for granted that which you cannot understand.
