Hilarious Book Goes to Film: The Devil Wears Prada by Lauren Weisberger

Rachel L.
This hilarious book, now a major motion picture, follows recent college graduate Andrea Sachs as she learns what life in the real world is like. Unfortunately for her, she has landed a job with the ultimate dictator, famed editor-in-chief of Runway Magazine, Miranda Priestly. Andrea had no idea what she was getting into when she accepted a job as Miranda's assistant. She walked into the Runway building, fashionably inept and looking for a way to work her way to The New Yorker unaware that she was about to begin the most grueling year of her life.

The demands of the almighty Miranda Priestly are enough to make anyone grateful for the everyday stresses they face. Andrea's job description borders on 'slave'. She is required to order breakfast every 15 minutes until Miranda's arrival simply to assure that her boss is supplied with a perfectly hot breakfast whenever she decided to show up at the office.

The new Harry Potter Book must be delivered before its release date to Miranda's very spoiled twin daughters. Bathroom and lunch breaks are non-existent for Andrea, who must be ready at all times to attend to Miranda's latest demand, which may or may not be too vague to actually understand what is wanted but still must be completed.

As her required year of servitude continues, Andrea learns what it is really like to be a part of the queendom that Miranda Priestly has created at Runway. She sacrifices relationships with her friends, family, and boyfriend to devote herself entirely to the job that has been promised to be her ticket to The New Yorker. The Runway culture invades every part of her life until she finds herself decorated like a Barbie doll simply to be deemed "acceptable" by her boss.

Character development is wonderful in this book, as you find yourself mentally encouraging Andrea in her day to day antics. Miranda Priestly is the woman that you will love to hate and she will definitely keep you guessing about what incredible request she will come up with next.

There is a rich variety in personalities, including Andrea's quirky roommate and genuine boyfriend. The conclusion of the book will shock and please you and it is doubtful that you will be able to put it down before you reach the end.

I would highly recommend this book for an entertaining, fairly light read.
