Hillary Clinton and Claire Danes Show Some Cleavage

Raising Eyebrows with Lowered Necklines

What do Claire Danes and Hillary Clinton have in common? To start with, they're both women, so they have cleavage. And cleavage affects people. Well, some people would have us believe it affects us.

Claire Danes bent over while being interviewed by Canadian MTV, leaving nothing to the imagination with her loose drapey top and lack of a bra. It comes as no surprise, because on her prior appearance on the Daily Show with John Stewart, I was holding my breath. Her top was a)flowing, b) low-cut, and she was c)bending over frequently. I was sure we were going to see something. My reaction wasn't out of horror that I might see something I shouldn't. It was out of a sense of been-there-done-that myself. I've had clothes slip before. I've worn things out and about, then took a close look in the mirror after the fact, and thought "oops, what was I thinking?"

Top that was more sheer than I realized worn without a camisole? Check. Tank top that offered less coverage than I would have chosen had I not been camping and had access to a mirror? Check. Linen skirt that should have been worn with a slip? Check, check, check.

Recently a fashion writer for the Washington Post wrote about an outfit that Hillary wore during a speech - a top that showed a hint of cleavage.

This is very different from my tiny tank top worn camping. I just looked innapropriate and then I was "that girl whose bra we could totally see" to a bunch of campers. Clearly my life has gone on. Claire Danes falling out of her dress might draw attention to her latest movie, or it might detract from it.

Hillary is a contender for the 2008 presidential election and we are in a time where decisions must be made carefully. This country doesn't have time to busy themselves with dissecting what candidates are wearing. We don't have time, and we don't have the space in our mental faculties to think about it. I also don't want to hear about tie colors or expensive haircuts. This is not What Not to Wear, Presidential Edition. Until Hillary has a Janet Jackson moment, such tiny details should be none of our concern.

In the meantime, there's double-sided adhesive you can buy to hold things in place. One such product is Hollywood Fashion Tape (found at hollywoodfashiontape.com ). It sticks your clothing to your skin right where you want it. That way you won't find yourself over-exposed should you bend over, or run for president.

Yes but can Hillary's outfit beat Edward's haircut in a primary election?...and maybe Canadian MTV has a different standard for that sort of stuff, and Claire was only trying to fit in...
