Hillary Clinton is the First Presidential Nominee in Laredo After 20 Years

LAREDO, Texas, February 21 - The people of my hometown, Laredo, Texas have not had a presidential nominee step foot in the city since approximately 20 years back. I thought that this was probably based on the fact that Laredo-ans don't seem to pay much attention to politics at all during any time, but on February the 21st I realized that there must be a different answer to why presidential nominees don't show up here, because the people of Laredo were excited beyond belief to have Hillary Clinton in town. All kinds of people from Laredo and even from across the border were standing in the streets waiting and talking about what they thought the senator would say.

Hillary presented herself at the Old City Hall of Laredo where she was received cheerfully by more than 1000 people no doubt. I didn't know if I was going to be attending this event, as I have seen Hillary already at other primaries, but I decided to go along with my mother, my aunt, my grandmother, and my younger sister because it would be their first time ever coming close to a presidential candidate. My aunt got to ask a question to the senator about her opinion on border security. The question was, "Are you for the border fence or against it?" Although Hillary's answer to that topic is that she is for the border fence, she went on to explain that in the long run it's actually a better way to secure the country, and she also explained that a lot of that border wall would be virtually built instead of hand made. My aunt was very please with her answer.

Hillary's appearance was set to be at 9:35am; that's what her website had said. However my family and I showed up at around 7am. At that time, there were already about 150 people there. Everyone was excited and holding their Hillary signs up. My experience at this event was unlike any other. I had already seen Hillary Clinton speak to other cities and I pretty much knew what she would say to the people. What made this experience the best one so far for me though, was seeing the reaction of my hometown to the candidate of my choice. I loved the enthusiasm that Laredo-ans were showing and I love all the support and the way they made Hillary feel while she was here. I could tell just by looking at her that she was feeling all sorts of emotions while speaking to my my local peers.

Hillary's speech did not last very long at all; it probably lasted around 30 minutes tops. During those 30 minutes though, she pretty much laid out all her plans, and all of her goals to the people of Laredo. In my opinion, the people heard exactly what they wanted to hear from her or from any candidate running for the presidency.

What was mentioned the most, and what she covered the most during the speech that she gave was her health care vision, universal health care. Her main deal is that everyone should have health care, and should be required to buy it by the government.

She then went on to talk about the situation in Iraq and how she would handle it if she were elected. Hillary let everyone know that her plan is to start bringing the troops home within the first year of her presidential term if she is elected. She mentioned public schooling, and the "No Child Left Behind" act. About that, she said that she knew that it wasn't working for the children, as it was apparently leaving more children behind than before the act was instated. Finally she discussed foreign policy, and border security, along with immigration. Although the people of Laredo, might have wanted to hear something else, they heard the truth, and they heard her reasons for choosing to take those actions if she were president, and then decided that they weren't such a bad idea.

The only thing to say about the aftermath of the appearance made by Hillary Clinton in Laredo, Texas is that she's the favorite. She's also the winner hands down of the people in this city. Seeing everyone line up to try and get her autograph, to shake her hand, to give her gifts of appreciation, and to just see all of the families and everyone clapping for her even after her speech was done and yelling "Te Amamos Hillary," meaning "We Love You Hillary," prove that to me.
