Hillary Clinton Leads John McCain and All Possible Democratic Rivals in Latest Polls

dogslife11
According to the Evans-Novak political report, Hillary Clinton is gaining ground in the polls. Most notably, she is 7 points ahead of John McCain by 50%-43%. This is significant because it's the first time a possible candidate for the 2008 Presidency has hit the 50% mark.

McCain and Hillary share something in common - their base is still unhappy with them. McCain has upset many conservatives with his moderate views, and Hillary has irritated many liberals with her own middle of the road stance on issues. McCain strongly supports the "troop surge" plan that would add up to 30,000 more troops to "stabilize" a deteriorating Iraq. President Bush is considering it eventhough it is very unpopular with the American people. John McCain has already employed many of the people who worked on Bush's campaigns. Is there a connection? Who knows, but America is losing patience with the situation in Iraq.

McCain will continue to go down in polls if he continues this "troop surge" nonsense. Joe Lieberman wrote an op-ed piece today praising the troop surge plan. I see this totally backfiring. The bottom line is, America is tired of a failed policy and it's becoming clear there is no military solution. In New Hampshire, a pivotal primary state that leans Republican, 38% of voters want the troops home now.

The problem Republicans have is a lack of charismatic Presidential contenders that suit the core "values" of conservatives. For example, John McCain and Rudy Giuliani are by far the two most recognized and popular stars for the nomination. But McCain has been trying so hard to woo conservatives that he's losing the very thing that people like about him - his maverick personality. Now he is seen as a wet finger in the wind, kissing up to the likes of Jerry Falwell. Rudy Giuliani will run on one major issue: 9/11. He hasn't given one speech in recent years where he doesn't mention 9/11 at least half a dozen times. Sure, he cleaned up NYC, but he's pro-choice, pro-gun control, pro-gay rights and conservatives know deep down that they can kiss their social agenda goodbye if he became President.

If John McCain and Rudy Giuliani ran together, that would be a very, very tough ticket to beat. But again, many conservatives are wary of putting social moderates in office. But who else has the ability to win now that George Allen is a mere afterthought? I see Republicans having an identity crisis in the 2008 primary. For Democrats, it will either be a fight for dominance, or smooth sailing for Clinton. According to MyDD and ARG polling, Hillary is leading all possible candidates in every primary state. The risk is spending massive amounts of money, exhausting yourself before the real race even starts is where the Democrats may run into trouble. So far, Clinton is playing her cards right. The fact that she's got a 7 point lead on McCain is very telling. She was never my first choice, I wrote an entire piece about Mark Warner and was saddened when he dropped out.

If Bush continues on this irrational path when dealing with Iraq, it will make it easier for Democrats in 2008 as it did two months ago. My fear is that Bush will authorize more troops, knowing things will get worse. They may be trying to force Democrats into a position of cutting funding off for the war - and then blame them for not supporting our troops.

I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but It's all politics at the end of the day.

McCain's voting record in the 109th Congress is the third most conservative. On the other hand, his voting record during the 107th Congress, places him as the 6th most liberal Republican senator, according to voteview.com. - Wikipedia

What polls are you referring to? Reference a poll that shows any top GOP candidate beating Hillary that is outside the margin of error.

Jeff, as usual you are a "bonehead". As for hitlery beating mcain. Who cares? mcain dug his own grave with his base. As for the polls that come out just about every other day, hitlery loses against any gop candidate she's matched with. It doesn't take a "village to raise a kid" only common sense. Can anyone out there name any piece of legislation sen. hitlery has written that actually passed or one that had any substance? I'll answer for you. None, nada, zilch, zero. I'm not a lawyer, but I'll play one here and say "I rest my case".

Good point Ninigurl... and thanks Oliver and Daniel for commenting as well, I always enjoy your input. I'm not a huge fan of Hillary, but I found it interesting that she's getting the traction she needs to run. Today her team blasted John Edwards for making comments directed at her over Iraq... Of all the '08 candidates, I am most worried about McCain... Say what you will about Hillary, but she is smart and knows what she's doing - whether you agree with her politics or not. But McCain has got a screw loose, and once he has power it's hard to say what he'll do with it. At least with Hillary, you know what to expect.

Ninigirl>> no flip-flop here, hillary scared me then just like she scares me now. Not in a "darth vader" kinda way mind you, more in a "hillary thinks she's better than everybody else" kinda way. . . Not to mention women are just plain frightening when they get PO'd!!

  • Ninigurl1/14/2007

Wait wasn't it all the Republicans and right-wingers who claimed during the last candidate's Presidency that Hillary was actually running the country THEN? Now like my own family you are all claiming you would be scared to have her in the White House? Which is it? Are the RIGHT flip-flopping now as someone so prominent stood on the podium and claimed about the Left? How about everyone take a step to the Middle and abolish "party crap." How about for once we all decide from the MIDDLE how to fix our country together!

And AJ, does it strike you as interesting that her picture here of her smiling is actually as disarming as the usual pictures of her scowling? She is an interesting public figure...if you are studying anti social personality disorders...and interpersonal dysfunction.

  • Daniel Doyle1/14/2007

(she is) ...going to make a lot of smoke and burn heck out of the tires, she's going to squeel and yelp and make tons of noise, but she will not quite make it...she knows it

  • Daniel Doyle1/14/2007

Hillary does not scare me. She would be the very worst option to govern this nation that the world would ever know. There is a dis-order in that embodiment of social dysfunction and in the White House It Would Emerge. This country has had enough of the Clintons. This country has had enough of what is left of the Kennedys too. Somehow all these yokels that would not make it anywhere else seem to just keep bobbing to the top on the east coast...what is up with that?
Right now the only winners this country has in the Repblican party would be Colin Powell and John McCain. One or the other for pres and the other VP. There is a way to make a ticket work with Condoleeza Rice too...but I don't know who should run with her. And AJ King. This is a very good article and you have my gears turning big time. I'll stop back by later, Sir!
As for the scam thing, Mr Hazard, as usual your vision is clear. That woman will not be pres though. She is going to tear hell out of the street, and she is goi

  • Oliver Hazard1/12/2007

Hillary frightens me as well and has always seemed hell-bent on power. I genuinely think that Hillary doesn't give two hoots about anyone but herself. Having said that, there is very little question in my mind that she will be the next president. Just wondering if anyone knows, do Bill and Hillary live together? Are they "staying together for the kids" or what? Hahaha Ah, maybe they are happily married, how should I know. I just think someone that has a sham marriage would probably make a sham president.

  • Charlotte Kuchinsky1/10/2007

I'm sorry. This woman scares the beegeebees out of me. Of course, that doesn't mean I like any of the other options in better so far. Good article, A.J. Keep us thinking!
