In alphabetical order, each state was called beginning with Alabama. One at a time, each state took turn casting votes to both Clinton and to Obama. Some states including California and Illinois passed on the chance to vote, hinting that they wanted to be the state to put the senator from Illinois ahead as the nominee.
However, as it got to New York's turn to cast her votes for nominee of choice, who showed up? Hilary! Yes, Hilary. With New York's 245 votes, the senator from New York called to fellow democrats including the 18 millions that voted for her, to break from tradition by ending the role call. She said that it is time they move on together and unite behind "our next president, Barack Obama."
Clinton went on to call for fellow party members to nominate Obama by acclamation. She received rousing ovation for that gesture, and her motion was seconded by all in the audience who answered a loud "ay" in favor of nominating Obama by acclamation. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi conducted the motion.
This has now officially become a historic moment in America's history. Barack Obama is officially the first man of African America decent to be nominated by a major political party in the United States. It is monumental, given the fact that only 54 years ago segregation in schools was still the norm. Today, blacks, whites, Latinos, Asians, Catholics, Jews, Christians Muslims, people of different faiths and creed, of different ethnicity and culture, come together, not segregated, for a common issue that affect them all. The issues include the belief that change needs to come from the bottom up.
